6 What are Fractions? n A fraction is a part of a whole. n Fractions are equal parts of a group. n Fractions are expressed with a/b. n The number a is the numerator. n The number b is the denominator. n Fractions are everywhere!!!

7 Basic Fractions 1 4 or one fourth 1 4 or one fourth is yellow is yellow

8 Basic Fractions 2 4, two fourths, or 2 4, two fourths, or one half is yellow. is yellow.

11 Activity n Take a piece of construction paper n Fold the paper in half n You should have two equal parts n Now fold the paper in half again n You should have four equal parts n Label each part

12 Adding Simple Fractions n Step 1: Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same. n Step 2: Add the top numbers (the numerators). Put the answer over the same denominator as in step 1 n Step 3: Simplify the fraction (if needed).

14 Breaking into Bigger Parts n Fractions can be divided in any number of equal parts. n Lets pretend our paper plate is a pizza. n Divide the pizza into eight equal pieces.

16 Questions! n If you eat 3 pieces of pizza, how much of a fraction of the pizza did you eat? n What if you were really hungry and ate 6 slices? n Now, if you ate all eight pieces… How much of the pizza did you eat?
