Building Your Paper Paragraphs and Quote Integration

Introductory Paragraph Tips for the perfect Intro Start by writing your thesis statement. Make sure that you use strong word choice. Remember it must state your argument. Try it….

Next Circle the most interesting words in the thesis you wrote above. (These could be nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) Choose just one of the words Write one sentence using that word. The key here is not to think about your topic or your thesis, but to write a sentence concentrating on only the word you chose. Write down your grand statement now……

Now.. You must write 3 -5 sentences that link your grand idea to your thesis statement. Give it a try… Let’s read our intro paragraphs

Body Paragraphs Must start with a topic sentence Then add evidence to support Must have explanation for each piece of evidence Then you transition into the next idea

Quote Integration Most of your evidence will come from outside sources You will need to integrate quotes into your paper

What You Need Introduce the quote Quote it Cite it Explain it

WHAT? I.C.E it BABY

I = Introduce Don’t just drop a quote in there. You must introduce the quote! Words and phrases to help introduce a quote  According to ________  As ____ explains___  In fact ______ asserts that _____  _____ argues that _______

Make Sure You Choose One that Fits! Acknowledges, comments, describes maintains, reports, adds, compares disputes, notes, responds, admits concedes, emphasizes, observes shows, agrees, confirms, endorses points out, states, illustrates, reasons suggests, asserts, declares, implies denies, insists,

C= Cite Must use MLA  Author’s last name and page #  (Smith 567) No author  Abbreviated title and page #  (“In School..” 23) No page # (Smith) (“In School…”)

E = Explain Must show reader why the quote is relevant How it supports your thesis/argument Answer the questions  What is the purpose of the quote?  How does it support my main idea?  Am I making the connections?

Example Paragraph The comfort level of the student has also been shown to be important to student learning. For example, girls are 58% more likely to participate in class if boys are not present (Tonk 42). Girls seem to be more comfortable expressing themselves without guys around. It is unclear, however, why this is the case. It is possible that it is related to the, “disgust many girls feel by the tendency of boys to pass gas in class” (“Academic Flatulence”). Obviously, girls are more comfortable when the class is not stinky, and perhaps are more likely to participate as a result.
