Wednesday 12/15/09 Following Instructions Lessons Drawing Lessons Finish Converging And Transform Fault Boundaries

What we will learn… Convergent plate boundaries are called destructive plate margins because lithosphere is being destroyed (actually recycled) at these boundaries. There are three types of convergent boundaries: oceanic- continental, oceanic-oceanic, continental-continental. A subduction zone occurs when one oceanic plate is forced down into the mantle beneath a second plate. At a transform fault boundary, plates grind past each other without destroying the lithosphere.

How we will do it… Whole class instruction Exemplars Reading Answering questions Drawing

Think-Pair-Share 1.What are the reasons why teachers have you read, draw and answer questions? 2.What are the reasons science teachers have you keep a notebook? 3.What are your goals in this class? 4.How well is your work helping you meet your goals?

Assignment: Converging and Transform Fault Boundaries p. 261-264 1.If new lithosphere is being created at divergent boundaries, is Earth’s crust getting bigger? Explain your answer. 2.Why are convergent plate boundaries called destructive plate margins? 3.What is a subduction zone? Where do subduction zones occur? Why do trenches occur at subduction zones? 4.List the three types of convergent boundaries. 5.Draw the picture of the oceanic-continental convergent boundary on p. 261. Remember to label parts. Use your own words to describe what is happening at an oceanic- continental boundary. Identify an example of where this feature can be found on Earth.

Assignment Questions Continued 6.Draw the picture of the oceanic-oceanic convergent boundary at the top of p. 262. Remember to label parts. Use your own words to describe what is happening at an oceanic-oceanic boundary. Identify an example of where this feature can be found on Earth. 7.Draw the picture of the continental-continental convergent boundary at the bottom of p. 262. Remember to label parts. Use your own words to describe what is happening at an continental-continental boundary. Identify an example of where this feature can be found on Earth. 8.What happens at transform fault boundaries? Where are most transform faults found? Where is an example of a transform fault boundary that cuts through continental crust?
