5 Expectations CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR – Students are expected to: Attend class regularly Be on time Be prepared for class Be an actively involved and contributing member of the class Have a positive attitude and be polite, courteous and respectful toward EVERYONE and their property Leave cell phones in lockers Nothing on desks except class items at all times Must ask for permission to leave the classroom at any time Never cheat – students are not allowed to work together on tests or homework assignments (unless specified by the teacher)

6 Clarification 1. Be in the classroom when the bell rings. The door will be shut and you will be late. After 3 times, you will receive a notice / write-up and a phone call home. 2. Come to class with a pencil, Honors binder, writing journal and book every day. You will not be permitted to go to your locker if you forget something. If this becomes a problem, a phone call home will be made. 3. In order for you to be a part of this learning community, you need to be an active member of it. This means both participating in it and especially having a positive attitude. If this becomes a problem, the appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken. 4. Treat others as you would have them treat you. This classroom is a safe community where learning occurs. We are polite and courteous to each other at all times. We respect others and their right to learn. If this becomes a problem, the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. 5. Absolutely no cell phones at any time. If one is seen, it will be confiscated and the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. 6. Students are not to leave class for any reason. This is an English class and we are preparing for an important exam at all times. You are not permitted to leave to do work for another teacher or another class. Do not ask! If this occurs, it will be counted as a class skip and appropriate disciplinary action will follow. 7. Keep only items for this class on your desk at all times. Anything else (purses, gym bags, food, drinks, etc) should be kept in your lockers or in the bins below your desk.

7 CLASSROOM PROCEDURES: Each class has a bin with the period marked. You are welcome to keep your materials in it, but I am not responsible for missing items. Also, be in your seat as the bell rings and not searching for materials from the bin. Every day begins with a journal prompt. Take QUIET time to write and reflect on this question. It will help you and your grade as these add up to points at the end of the nine weeks. You will be assigned a group “island.” This will be your cooperative learning group for several weeks. You will be expected to work with these peers and graded by your ability to form a working relationship. Group work can get noisy. As long as you are working on class work, that is fine. However, if I need your attention, I will go to the front of the room with my hand up. Everyone is to be quiet at this point. If I cannot get your attention, you will be disciplined.

8 ABSENCES AND MAKE-UP WORK Students are expected to: See the teacher immediately (preferably before school starts or in homeroom) if he/she has been absent for make-up work. Missed worksheets will be under the class bin with the student’s name. Starting from the day of return, the student must complete missing work in the number of days that he/she was absent from class. If the student does not consult the teacher for make-up work, a “0” will be given for each missing assignment. If a student knows beforehand that he/she will be absent, please inform the teacher to plan for make-up work to be given. Some in-class assignments cannot be duplicated outside of class. In this case, alternative assignments will be given. Note, however, that grades will depend (in part) on class participation. Therefore, attendance is extremely important. DISMISSAL The teacher will dismiss all students at the end of the class period.
