2 nd Cycle  This lesson begins the second cycle of training, in which Squires study to become Knights copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Song of Amergin  The Book of Invasions (12 th century) copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

The Book of Invasions  "Amergin" (or “Amhairghin“) means "Birth of Song". He is found in the Leabhar Gabhála (Book of Invasions) which appears in ancient manuscripts such as the Book of Leinster (12 th century). copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

The Book of Invasions  According to Celtic legend, Amhairghin was one of the leaders of the Mílesians ("Men of Míl“), who battled the Tuatha Dé Danann (“People of the Goddess Danu”) for possession of Ireland. The Song of Amergin was Amergin’s challenge to the Tuatha Dé Danann as he came ashore. The Tuatha Dé Danann were the Gods invoked in the Armoring in the last lesson. copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Song of Amergin IIII am the wind on the deep waters: I am the ocean wave; I am the roar of the tides; I am the bull of seven battles; I am the hawk on the cliff face; I am a drop of the sun; I am the most beautiful of flowers; I am the boar on the rampage; I am a salmon in the pool; I am a lake on the plain ; I am a hill of poetry; I am the spear charging into battle; I am the god that puts fire in your head; Who spreads light in the gathering on the hills? Who knows the ages of the moon? Who but I knows the dark secret of the dolmen not yet hewn? Who knows where the setting sun rests? Who took the cattle from the house of the war crow? Who pleases the war crow's cattle? What bull, what god created the mountain skyline? The cutting word, the cold word. I am the womb of every hold; I am the blaze on every hill; I am the queen of every hive; I am the shield to every head; I am the spear of battle. I am the ninth wave of eternal return. I am the tomb to every bone.

“I Am” Exercise  Think of things that inspire you, make you feel powerful.  Come up with one line, starting “I am..” along the same lines as those that you just read in the Song of Amergin.  This “I am” line should declare how you feel powerful. copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Why the “I am”…? EEEEach of these “I am” lines from each of the Order of Paladins students is incorporated into a “Song of Paladins” ritual that is part of our formal Circle casting. It reappears as a key element in the 3rd degree ritual: The Mastering. It is a phrase that represents your power and that of those you are working with.

The Uranaikan copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

The Uranaikan  A uranaikan is a Japanese divination hall  This is a place in Caer Paladin where the water and earth energy merge.  This is a safe place for students to do dream divination, remote viewing or other divination work  This is a good place to meditate to find your “I Am” statement. copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Song of Paladins  Spoken together, the collection of every member’s “I ams” forms a group statement of power. This is followed by the concluding lines of the Song of Amergin. copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Song of Paladins II  Some of us have gone beyond our single “I Am” line, expanding it into a poem, haiku or statement. In the next slide, I’ll show you mine. copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Kerr’s Song of Paladins  I am the sudden silence in the midnight forest  Silence in the trees  I am the one who watches  Everything I see.  I am the rushing power of the forest river  Power in the deep  I am the endless torrent  That never sleeps.  I am the startling wind in the highest branches  Making branches bend  I am the restless wind  That magick sends.  I am the brooding stillness of the cliff face  Overlooking all  I am the firm foundation  That never falls. copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Silent Quarter Calls  Refer to the quarters discussed in the last lesson copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Correspondences  East/Air/To Will/Sword/Athame  South/Fire/To Imagine/Spear/Wand  West/Water/To Dare/Cauldron/Chalice  North/Earth/To Keep Silent/Shield/Pentacle  Center/Spirit/To Know/Spirit/Mind copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Silent Quarter Calls  I want you to cast a Circle and call the quarters without speaking a single word.  Find things that make noise and use these to invoke the quarters. For example, you might use a rain stick or an ocean drum (which simulates wave sounds) to invoke the west or wind chimes to invoke the east. copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

The Armory copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

The Armory  Inside Caer Paladin there is a building just south of the Air Temple called “The Armory”  If you’re trying to decide what Magickal Weapon to dedicate yourself to, this is a good place to go to discover it  Being between the Air Temple and Fire Temple, this is a place where the fire and air energies merge, just like in a blacksmith’s forge. copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain

Lesson 7 homework reminder  Go to the Uranaikan and come up with a one line “I am” statement demonstrating your power and e mail it in.  Do a “silent quarter calls” ritual, calling the quarters using sound and gestures but NO WORDS.  Go to the Armory in Caer Paladin to discover what your Magickal Weapon is. copyright 2013 Kerr Cuhulain
