Fuel Economy  The most important element in determining the fuel economy of a particular vehicle is the driving techniques of the individual behind the wheel.  The importance of individual gasoline savings cannot be overemphasized.

Energy Efficient Driving  Smooth Acceleration  Consistent Speed  Smooth Braking  Prolong Idling  Plan Your Route in Advance

Fuel Conservation While Traveling  Use maps and atlases that give a clear view of routes available.  Try the internet to plan door-to-door trip analysis and estimate mileage.  Use of limited access highways (interstate) are safer and more energy efficient.

Calculating Fuel Consumption  After a fill-up, record the odometer reading.  The next time you fill-up, record the reading again and how many gallons it took to fill- up.  Subtract the two odometer readings and divide that number by the gallons used to fill-up.  This number indicates the number of miles your vehicle can travel on one tank of gas!

Vehicle Maintenance  Because vehicle requirements may vary greatly, one should always check your vehicle’s owner’s manual to determine the manufacturer’s recommended schedule for preventive maintenance.  Following the schedule will save you from paying expensive repair bills later.  Ignoring the recommended service intervals may also void the warranty on the vehicle.

Owner’s Manual Guidelines  Engine oil requirements and changing oil filters  Proper grade of gasoline  Cleaning and replacing carburetor air filter  Servicing air conditioners  Power train maintenance  Ignition system and spark plugs  Engine performance evaluation

Maintenance Checks  Set up a routine maintenance schedule.  Keep a record of work done.  Record whether you did the work or if you had a mechanic do the work.

Other Routine Maintenance Checks  Weekly Oil Level  Windshield Wipers and Washer Fluid  Coolant  Tire Tread  Belt and Hose Condition  A/T Fluid  Power steering Fluid  Battery Cables and Terminals  Brakes and Shocks
