2 Objectives/SOL DE.2 The student will demonstrate an understanding of basic vehicle operating procedures. Key concepts/skills include c) vehicle information, warning, and control devices; DE.18 The student will analyze how preventive maintenance reduces the possibility of vehicle failures and recognize the warning signs that indicate the need for maintenance, repair, or replacement. Key concepts/skills include a) vehicle warning devices; b) lights and signals; c) steering and suspension systems; d) tires and braking systems; e) cooling system and belts; f) fuel and ignition electronics.

3 How do you pop the hood of a car?  Open the Hood Open the Hood By releasing the latch in the footwell of the driver’s that is labeled with this image

4 Can you use water as windshield washer fluid? When and why?  Yes, in the summer or if you run out of washer fluid. NOT in the winter because it will freeze and crack the washer fluid tube.

5 How do you check the oil levels in your car? Open hood Pull out oil dipstick Wipe it clean with a clean towel Return it to its original position Pull it back out and locate how much of the dipstick that the oil covers  Checking Engine Oil Checking Engine Oil

6 How do you know how many cylinders your engine is?  By the number of spark plugs; count the cylinders

7 On the battery, which side is positive and which side is negative?  The + sign is positive and typically identified with a red mark or cover  The – sign is negative and typically identified with black markings
