THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR The War That Made The United States

French Explorers Travel Through North America France began its colony in North America when Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence River in 1534. In 1608, Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec. Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet explored the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi River in the early 1600s. Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle explored the lower Mississippi and claimed it for France in 1682, naming it Louisiana.

The French Experience in North America France’s North American colony consisted mainly of fur trappers and frontiersmen. They wanted to exploit their territory economically rather than settle it. The French developed good relations with Native Americans through trading.

The War Begins In the 1750s, France was England’s greatest rival. French trappers expanded on English territory. Ft. Duquesne in the Ohio Country. This encroached on the land of Virginia planters. The English sent soldiers to the Ohio country to protect its settlements. An English contingent, led by George Washington, built an outpost called Ft. Necessity. Washington attacked French soldiers and the war began.

Early French Victories The Indian alliance with the French helped in early battles. The French were successful early in the war because of their hit and run tactics. The British army was not used to this type of fighting.

The British Turn the Tide William Pitt, a new English leader, borrowed a lot of money from the English government to create a large army. With this large army, and help from the Iroquois Indians, the English began defeating the French. The war ended in 1763.

Two Outcomes of the War The British won all of the land of North America east of the Mississippi River. The Proclamation of 1763 banned all settlement of colonists west of the Proclamation line. The cause of the Proclamation of 1763 was because England would engage in costly conflicts between settlers and Native Americans The line outlawed English settlement west of the Proclamation Line.
