7 Liberals: Did not advocate democracy Extending representation to propertied classes (strongly disliked poorer class) Laissez-faire Free trade

8 Conservatism Legitimate Monarchies Landed Aristocracies Established Churches Protection of Property

9 Beliefs of Conservatives Monarchs could only trust governments of aristocracy. No representative govt. could protect private property. No written constitutions. The Church- hated Enlightenment ideas.

10 Austrian Prince Metternich Epitomized 19 th Century Conservatism. Attempted to keep the states of the German confederation from having constitutions. Prevented Austria from having a representative government.

11 Groups under Metternich’s control Germans, Hungarians, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Italians, and Croats.

12 Frederick William III Conservative Promised a constitutional gov’t. for Prussia Through some inter- working, kept complete control of Prussia (junkers).
