3 FAIRTRADE Registration The Greenfield estate is included on the International Fairtrade Tea Register. A Social Committee (Joint body), made up of elected representatives from the estate residents, is responsible for deciding how funding is used with regard to improving facilities on the estate. Under the Fairtrade system, a Social Premium is levied on the cost of the tea, and this Premium is paid to the Social Committee. A clear audit trail exists for the Social Premium, and regular inspections ensure the integrity of the Social Premium system. Recently a new Social Centre has been built on the estate from the Social Premium money.

4 Fairtrade Green field was certified Fair Trade in 1998. Fair Trade for the workers meant an allowance allocated to the Fair Trade Joint Body for projects (developmental mainly) in addition to the daily wages. The allowance/ premium is paid to the Joint Body directly by the customer. Projects carried out are mainly funding and grants for education, financial assistance (loans and grants) for specific personal needs. The funds are used in projects aimed at the upliftment of the quality of life within the local community.
