4 EDUCATION AS A LIFE-LONG PROCESS Education has become a life-long process because technology demands updating our skills and knowledge. Besides more years of formal education, updating our credentials may be achieved in other ways, such as: Continuing education units (CEUs) Committee assignments Post-graduate residencies Professional conferences Hands-on workshops On-the-job training On-line networking On-line courses Copyright © by Pearson Education, Inc. 5 STRATEGIES FOR A FIRST-TIME INTERVIEW After obtaining an interview with an attention-getting resume, the next task is to prepare for a successful interview by: Preparing some questions you would like answered, such as opportunities for advancement, and educational possibilities. Reading up on the history of the organization. Don’t show off your knowledge. Your knowledge will emerge as you are interviewed. Wear your new interview suit a few times to feel comfortable in it. Practice being interviewed with a few friends. Arrive a few minutes early. Thank them for the interview and for the opportunity of being considered. Ask when to expect an answer. Don’t wait around and mope, however. It may take weeks for a decision. Get started on your next job interview, which should go even better since you now have some “real life” experience of being interviewed. Copyright © by Pearson Education, Inc. All rights reserved

6 FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER-LADDER: PEOPLE SKILLS The ability to get along with others and to foster good communication among those for whom you are responsible are the keys to advancement within an organization. A good supervisor, manager, or executive: Operates on assumptions of Theory Y Acts like a team captain, bringing out the creative best in workers Provides positive feedback to workers Keeps communication flowing in all directions Knows how to resolve conflict: Avoids blame, seeks win-win solutions Is sensitive to issues of gender, ethnicity, age, and sexual harassment Copyright © by Pearson Education, Inc. 7 FOR A REALISTIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE AMERICAN FAMILY Consider these Facts According to the 2000 Census 20 percent of Americans move every year and the nuclear family often moves far from friends and family One out of every two marriages is ending in divorce (but remember some people have multiple marriages) 25 percent of American house-holds are non-traditional, consisting of unwed mothers, single persons, single mothers, divorced families, stepfamilies, etc. Adolescents are more computer savvy than their parents and may be surfing unsavory and dangerous web sites on the Information Highway Copyright © by Pearson Education, Inc. 8 THE WORKING WIFE-AND-MOTHER HAS ALWAYS BEEN WITH US But she was called by other names: The village laundress The house maid The village seamstress The camp cook The midwife The nanny or governess The school “marm” The migrant worker The field hand The milk maid..... And so on! Copyright © by Pearson Education, Inc. All rights reserved

9 FOSTERING MULTICULTURAL FRIENDSHIP We can foster understanding of other cultures in our schools with classroom events where children share their cultural dress, foods, song and dance. The children can make posters that describe name calling and bullying as childish and wrong. We can encourage different ethnic groups to share tables at school functions and invite other cultural groups for festivities in our home and elsewhere in the community.
