3. 8” to 15” tall. 8”to 12” wide. Commonly has 5 leaves. Perrineal. fig. 1

4. Greenish brown stem. Makes up most of the height of the tree. fig. 2

5. Brown twig coming off of the main stem. fig. 3

6. Long stalked, compound leaves. Horse-Nut shaped leaves. Usually 5 finely toothed leaflets on each leaf. Leaflets about 5” long. fig. 4

7. One bud per twig. Five leaflets grow out of the one bud. Green in color and small. fig. 5

8. A small group of yellow, white, or green flowers. Bloom in late spring or early summer. Bloom in the center of the main leaf. Slightly aromatic but not very visually appealing. fig. 6

9. From each cluster of flowers grows red berries. fig. 7

10. Grows from Eastern to Midwest United States. From Texas up to parts of the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario. fig. 8

11. Grown for medicinal purposes in China for centuries. Its root is used as seasoning in recipes. fig. 9
