Practice What You Preach: Local Art Teacher Exhibitions Nicole Crane Britt Feingold

Palm Beach County Art Teachers Association Local Art Organization in Florida; 1 st largest by area, 3 rd largest in population Members include art teachers, teachers, museum staff, community artists, and retirees. Over 200 K-12 art teachers in the district and currently 125 are members. Activities include scholarships, professional development, student and member exhibitions, and local and state art competitions.

Communication One of the most important aspects of a successful exhibition and what holds it together. Reminders of upcoming exhibitions, due dates, forms, drop-off and pick-up.

Member Exhibitions Our organization hosts member exhibits 3-5 times a year. Exhibitions are scheduled up to two years in advance. Members are constantly looking for new venues to exhibit. The fees go directly to the PBCATA scholarship fund and support the organization. Coming up with creative titles

Exhibitions continued… The Vice-President is responsible for coordinating all aspects of exhibitions. Call to artists are given a month in advance, applications are submitted, and then work is juried. Members must follow the procedures of submitting images, submitting the artist exhibition form, and paying the fees. Members must adhere to the due dates

Logistical Challenges Diverse locations Communicating with venues Gaining participants Teacher friendly schedule Adhering to due dates Creating Press Releases Successful Opening

Strategies for Securing Venues Make calls, scout spaces, submit proposals to suitable locations Proposals include information about the organization as well as examples Most venues book shows years in advance Follow up with all leads

To Whom It May Concern: On behalf of the Palm Beach County Art Teachers Association (PBCATA), I would like to propose an exhibition of member artworks for a future show at (Insert Venue). PBCATA exhibits members’ artwork throughout Palm Beach County approximately 3-4 times a year. Some venues PBCATA has exhibited in over the past few years include Old School Square, Palm Beach State College, and the Armory Art Center. PBCATA envisions an exhibition that consists of a variety of artwork submitted by roughly 15-20 of our members. The association is flexible about the length and dates of this prospective show. PBCATA has examples of past shows for your convenience. I hope that you will consider the Palm Beach County Art Teachers Association for a future show in your gallery. Thank you,

Guidelines Each venue has specific guidelines – FAU- smallest side must not be below 20” (due to space) – Northwood-must have original contract (or participant cannot exhibit) – Size – Specific documentation Some spaces will have reasonable guidelines, others may be more challenging in which case your organization may not want to exhibit there in the future

Artist Agreements Exhibiting artists must follow the venue’s as well as the organization’s guidelines Each venue is different – Some venues allow nudity – Some venues only want small/large pieces of work Some venues require individual art contracts, others require only a group contract

Submission Artists/Members are given due dates – Who is participating? – Paying the fees. – Checking Labels for show – Dropping off and picking up Due dates are very important – You want to keep deadlines in order to retain a positive reputation – No reason for not receiving an invite back

Delivery and Pick Up Date are pre-determined Part of the contract with the venue – Usually between set hours and over 1-2 days – Some places are flexible with early drop-off, however the best scenario is to ask a colleague who is exhibiting to drop-off or a family member Installation – Some places do their own installation – Other places ask that the organization sets up the exhibit Labels – The venue decides who creates labels

Publicity Press Release – Our district PR contact distributes the press release – The press release is picked up by local media for articles Media – Facebook – Emails – Word of Mouth Palm Beach Pulse – Free Advertising through the Palm Beach Post website Community Events page
