2 T HE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY In 1890 the university was founded as Woolwich polytechnic. In 1970 it joined with other higher education institutions to form Thames polytechnic. From 1976 to 1988 many other colleges joined expanding the subjects taught. In 1992 the century old Thames polytechnic was granted university status & renamed university of Greenwich.

4 D IFFERENT CAMPUSES. The Greenwich campus is on the banks of the river Thames. The largest campus is centred on three baroque buildings. These buildings were designed by sir Christopher wren at the end of the 17 th century,. Also on the campus of Greenwich is a gallery which contains a showcase for the work of contemporary artists. The university also attracts a lot of tourists for the painted hall & chapel.

5 D ID YOU KNOW ? That Greenwich are No.1 for the quality of teaching in London. Which puts them ahead of 20 other universities. The staff have been awarded winner of the times higher education most innovative teacher award. A status which is recognised as exceptional teaching. They also work with employers to provide workplace skills students really need.

6 T HE CAMPUSES OF GREEENWICH UNIVERSITY ! Greenwich is a bustling town with a great atmosphere fostered by markets, pubs, clubs and restaurants. Up the Creek, a comedy and cabaret club, offers up-and-coming names in stand-up and is a short walk from the campus.

7 F ACILITIES. The university of Greenwich was named the host for the London 2012 games. The university's student union building was part of Greenwich park venue for the games. Major libraries, computing facilities, student union facilities, catering facilities and bars at all campuses. Avery Hill's bar has been transformed into a cafe bar with twice the capacity, and there is a new gym and sports fields on campus. Medway has a sports centre with a recently upgraded gym.

8 T RANSPORT. Greenwich can be reached by rail or boat by docklands light railway. You can reach London bridge within 10 minutes. Avery hill to London bridge is a 10-15 minute walk to the station. The Medway campus takes 45 minutes from London by train, then bus in Medway, which stops on the campus. Greenwich provides a bus service between all three campuses. The Avery hill to Greenwich service is free. There is also a free service between Avery hill and falconwood station.

9 There aren't many universities that can boast a world heritage site, but this one can. Avery Hill campus, in the 86-acre park in Eltham, south- east London, and Medway, another charming campus full of Edwardian redbrick and ivy, near Chatham's historic dockyard

11 F EES. In March 2005 it was announced that Greenwich would be one of three British universities charging less than the £3000-per-year limit to be introduced from academic year 2006. After consultation with students, Greenwich will charge £2,500 for its undergraduate courses. Vice-Chancellor Baroness Blackstone said this was "a reflection of our wish to attract students from a wide range of backgrounds.

12 T ECHNOLOGY. The University of Greenwich has recently established the Institute of Converging Arts and Sciences, directed by Professor Sue Golding, to examine the development of digital technology, its aesthetics and philosophy. The inaugural conference of the Institute in October 2009 included a public lecture by Dame Wendy Hall. Another research centre is the Natural Resources Institute at the Medway Campus, Kent.
