18. Structure Nine main Schools, 3 research institutes, 1 division of learning enhancement. The Office of Information and Library Services (ILS) delivers Learning Resources, ICT infrastucture and Corporate Information Systems. ILS has staff and facilities at all campuses inc. libraries, student PC labs, ICT service teams. The off-campus user's support team OSCARS (Off Campus Services, Contact and Remote Support) was created within ILS in 2004 in recognition of the distinctive support needs of this important and growing category of user.

19. e-Learning Strategy Developed in 2005-6, defines e-Learning as, “the use of ICT to provide a range of approaches to enhance and extend learning for a wide range of individuals and groups”. Recognises that ‘one size does not fit all’: technologies need to be matched to pedagogical intentions and learners’ diverse needs. Adopts Scribbens and Powell’s 2003 model of e-learning, the ‘e-learning fan’ – flexible model with an emphasis on blended learning, linked with L&T Strategy.

20. e-learning: managing diversity Guided by recognition of e-L support for enhancement of learning, cost-effectiveness, competitive advantage; Celebration of diversity: School specialist solutions; Endorse and support one main platform (WebCT) but enable a range of other e-learning platforms to be used by Schools; 3 platforms in use – (1) individual products such as WebCT; (2) Open source and freeware, e.g. Moodle, LAMS and Bodington; (3) bespoke platforms including engweb and teachmat (CMS) & Lotus notes (E&T)

21. Summary Managing diversity in e-learning - flexible responses for a complex, large HEI with history of mergers and different cultures. Time to turn to the SWOT exercise!
