1 7 October 2015 Biosolids Activities at Dusty Road

2

3 Status Update – Dusty Road  Wastewater treatment shut down in April  Composting trials of SWRC biosolids by Salish Soils from mid- March  Withdrawal of sludge from main lagoon by Sylvis from Apr-Oct  Replacement of blower for aerated lagoon October (energy savings)  Start of Geotube dewatering October.  Expect complete de-sludging of lagoon and racetrack by mid 2016

5 Biosolids Volumes

6 Septage Volumes  Annual total 2014 6270 cu.m  Average weekday volume 24 cu.m/day  Solids content 0.8% (summer 2015)  Expect about 20 tons/month dewatered septage

7 Composting Trials by Salish Soils  Asked for use of site in 2014 for initial composting trials  Biosolids volumes not guaranteed by Sechelt  Existing sludge drying bed is suitable for composting  Expected duration 6 months

8 Biosolids  Centrifuge dewatering to 20% solids  Average production 2 tons per day  1.5 to 2 truckloads per week  meeting all the metals requirements for Class A compost

9

10 Biosolids Composting by Salish Soils  Trials at Dusty Rd since March  Good pile heating  Approx 2:1 ratio woodchips to biosolids  Moving offsite end of September [correction – extension to end of Oct pending Council decision]  Expect first Class A Product in October [correction – final screened product not until 2016]  Available for sale in 2016

11

12

13 Permitting  Dusty Road is Permitted under Waste Management Permit PE-4088  Includes “sludge digestion, drying and handling facilities”  Composting is a form of drying  “sludge wasted from the treatment plants shall be disposed of to a site and in a manner approved by the Director, or as authorized by regulation under the Waste Management Act”

14 The Future  When composting activities finish, and the lagoons are emptied and decommissioned, only septage receiving and dewatering will remain  Then PE-4088 will be cancelled  Site lease to 2031  “Land Swap” with LeHigh is still a possibility.
