1 Chapter 2 – Plant Structures and Functions Plant Transport Systems
Lesson 2 – Plant Transport Systems

2 How do different materials move in plants?
Roots xylem: moves water and minerals up from roots to the stem phloem: carries sugar from leaves down the stem and into roots

3 How do different materials move in plants?
Roots taproots: thick; grow deep (carrots, beets) fibrous roots: thin (grass) prop roots: finger-like (corn)

4 What is the transport system made of?
Xylem and phloem continue up from the roots all the way through the stem. cambium: layer in stem where new xylem and phloem are made.

5 Tree Rings Bark (protective outer layer) phloem xylem

6 Tree Rings A ring of xylem grows every year, so you can count the rings to determine the age of the tree.
