1 Grammar: subject/predicate and objects

2 In general… Every complete sentence must have at least two components:
A thing (noun) An action (verb) In sentence structure they are called… Subject Predicate

3 Subjects the subject is the noun that takes action
To find the subject, ask yourself: who or what is taking this action? The answer is your subject.

4 Examples John went to the store. It was hot outside.

5 Predicate The predicate is the action
Action verbs are easy to identify, but remember verbs of being: am, is, are, were, was A sentence can have more than one predicate

6 Examples We ate pizza. Love was his only motivation.

7 Objects Objects are nouns in the sentence or clause that do not take actions If a noun takes the predicate, it is the subject; therefore, if a noun is not the subject then it must be an object.

8 example We ate chicken. I forgot my shoes.

9 Compound Subject and Predicates
Occurs when a clause has more than one subject or predicate functioning as a single unit A compound subject is when two or more separate subjects take the same predicate A compound predicate is when a subject or group of subjects take two or more predicates

10 Examples John and I played a game. I went home and studied.
