2 Religious Conflict  Calvinists fought against Catholics in France during the mid-late 16 th century.  These protestants were called Huguenots and they were a minority in France  Their leader was a man named Henry of Navarre, who was baptized a Catholic but raised a protestant.

3 King Henry  Before becoming king, he was the leader of the Huguenots  He eventually converted to Catholicism, ending the fighting  He created the Edict of Nantes in 1598, which gave his former followers religious freedom, but only were Protestant was the religious majority  With both groups not fighting, Henry was able to reform the church  Many attempts on his life were made, and he was assassinated in 1610.

4 Religious Unity  Henry’s reforms and Edict showed unity, instead of conflict  He was able to do this by converting to Catholicism, but still being semi loyal to his former religion as king
