15 Security in Office 365 TLS/SSL Bitlocker AES Azure RMS (IRM)
MGXFY13 4/26/2017 Security in Office 365 TLS/SSL Encrypts the tunnel to help prevent snooping/eavesdropping. All services make use of “perfect forwarding secrecy” technology (next gen SSL). Bitlocker AES Hashes the data on the hard drives in the datacenter so that if someone gets unauthorized access to the machine they can't read it. All backend storage for Office 365 will also be included (SQL transaction logs, Azure Blob storage) Azure RMS (IRM) Prevents sensitive information from being printed, forwarded, or copied by unauthorized people inside the organization (single element encryption, BYOK - bring your own key included) Office 365 Message Encryption, S/MIME Provides cryptographic security services for electronic messaging applications: authentication, message integrity, non-repudiation of origin, privacy and data security Third party encryption Provides cryptographic privacy and authentication for data communication. PGP is often used for signing, encrypting, and decrypting texts, s, files, directories, and whole disk partitions and to increase the security of communications DC to DC Encryption All traffic send across private connections between MSFT datacenters is encrypted preventing physical breaches of landline cabling File level encryption at rest In addition to Bitlocker encryption we will add individual file level encryption mechanisms for Sharepoint Online and Onedrive for Business Advanced encryption for Encryption of Exchange databases to separate operating system and application incl. 17 Office 365 is an evergreen service.
One of the great benefits of the service is that it is evergreen, meaning always up to date when it comes to security patches, updates and upgrades. As a result, software update cycles of the on-premises part of the overall solution ideally should be in sync or at least a supported version to avoid integration and compatibility issues. Our solution evolves rapidly with a documented roadmap. One of the great benefits of the service is that it is evergreen, meaning always up to date when it comes to security patches, updates and upgrades. The consequence of this is that the software update cycle of the on-premises part of the overall solution ideally should be in sync (or at least N-1 for the client software) to avoid integration and compatibility issues. For major upgrades the deployment window is roughly 12 months from announcement to enforcement. We provide services offers to help you migrate to the cloud efficiently Another great benefits of the service is that there is a clear roadmap towards feature parity with on-premises solutions, meaning that features like enterprise search with FAST will be delivered from the cloud in a foreseeable future and customization via Azure integration extends the capabilities of the platform. For major upgrades the deployment window is roughly 12 months from announcement to enforcement.

18 Delivering Innovation
Exchange Office 365 Cloud-first Delivery Continuous Innovation Rapid Feedback One Team Single Codebase Cumulative update Cumulative update Service pack Cumulative update New version As we get started let’s take a look at how the Exchange team ships these innovations. Life is certainly different from the history of ~3 year updates. One thing that has remained the same is that Exchange – both online and on-prem is a single engineering team. We knew the best way to deliver innovations was not to fork the code, but rather engineering the process and tools that enable us to develop in a single code base and ship to Office 365 customers and on-prem Exchange server customers. A very important element to understand is that we deliver new features to the cloud first – that isn’t because we like Office 365 customers but delivering to the cloud is the place where we have the opportunity to delivery continuous updates and new value to the customers. Deploying to the cloud enables the engineering team to get rapid feedback as the features and immediately deployed in the service allow the coupling of the new features and quick feedback. Note that when we deploy to Office 365 it is done in waves or “flights” allowing us to ensure the service itself remains stable with continuous stream of new features being added to the service. We then ship features to Exchange Server – we do this in a manner that meets on-prem customers need for balance of stability and new features. Exchange Server 2013 is updated in a predictable model with Cumulative Updates and Service Packs. Cumlative Updates are delivered approximately once a quarter – of course the exact release date is manipulated to ensure the releases meet a very high release quality bar. Generally these releases contain bug and security fixes – you shouldn’t expect all of the new features to be offered to on-prem Excahnge’s next CU or SP. The bulk of new features will be made available in next version of Exchange enabling customers to plan for the change this time of upgrade brings to your environment. We plan to release the next version of Exchange in calendar year 2015. Now you know how we get innovations to you let’s spend the rest of the session looking at these features – I promise demos are coming very soon.
