2 Our Drivers Role of the Schools Infrastructure Unit (SIU) Develop the Schools Estate Strategy in partnership with COSLA; up to date information on the extent of school estates and its condition; monitoring delivery of A+DS Schools Programme. Deliver Governments commitment to half number of children taught in poor quality schools during the life of this Parliament. Work with Scottish Futures Trust to oversee delivery of Scotland’s School for the Future Programme – to agree methodology & criteria for inviting & assessing bids for Phase III. Manage the casework associated with the application of the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010. Provide support and the secretariat for the Commission on Rural Education.

3 Building Better Schools: Investing in Scotland’s Future Aspiration for the school estate Our schools are “fit for purpose” in terms of condition, suitability & sufficiency Our schools are well designed, accessible, inclusive leaning environments which support delivery of high quality educational experiences through CfE Our schools are integral parts of the communities they serve Our schools accommodate & provide a range of services Our school estate is sustainable and is environmentally & energy efficient Our school estate is efficiently run & delivers VFM Our school estate is flexible & responsive

4 Building Better Schools: Investing in Scotland’s Future Going forward SG will “re-engage” with LAs on their school estates & SEMPs – establish a rolling programme of meetings, starting this summer. Establish a national picture of investment in Scotland’s school estate Translating the benefits realised of Schools for the Future Programme onto a wider basis – we can all benefit from the lessons & experiences learned going forward; these should not be limited only to projects forming part of the “programme”. Question for discussion – “How do you think we can best take this forward?”
