MOON J ASON L OPEZ

HOW WAS IT CREATED? There are many theories, but one theory says that a giant planetoid crashed with the Earth billions of years ago. It then created a cloud of debris, after a long time it then came together to form what is now the Moon.

The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. It is the second brightest object in the sky after the sun. Also, during ancient times the Moon had a large influence on language, calendars, art, and mythology. INTRO

The Moon is slowly moving away from us at a rate of 4 centimeters a year. This is a results of Tidal forces, it is called the ‘sling shot’ effect. DRIFTING….

GRAVITY The Moon’s gravity is about 17% the pull of gravity on the Earth. You can jump six time higher and carry objects six times heavier.

TIDAL EFFECTS The tides on the Earth is caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon, but the Sun helps too. This causes big and low tides because of it. Also, the Moon is pulling up the crust of the Earth causing it to bulge up.

AGE OF THE MOON? The Moon is about 4.5 billion years old.

ECLIPSES LUNAR The lunar eclipse happens when the moon passes behind the Earth, which blocks the Sun’s rays. SOLAR The solar eclipse happens when the moon is in between the Earth and the Sun. It only happens during a new moon.

The time it takes to spin around once in it’s own axis is about the same amount of time it take to orbit the Earth one time, 27.3 days. This means one face of the Moon will always face us. This is called a sidereal month. ROTATION/ORBIT

LUNAR PHASE There are a total of eight phases. The lunar phases changes because of the Moon’s orbit.

NATURAL SATELLITE A natural satellite is a celestial body that orbits a planet or smaller body. The Moon is the fifth natural satellite in the Solar System. The largest moon is Jupiter’s Ganymede, followed by Saturn’s Titan, Jupiter’s Callisto, Jupiter’s Io, and finally, the Earth’s Moon.

SIZE & WEIGHT The Moon’s diameter is 2,159 miles. It’s mass is 1/81 of the Earth’s. It looks like it is the same size of the sun, but it is not, the Sun is 400 times bigger than the Moon.

INTERNAL STRUCTURE These are the four main internal structure of the Moon: the mantle, partial melt, fluid outer core, and solid inner core. It is believed to have been created by fractional crystallization of a magma ocean shortly after its formation about 4.5 billion years ago.

The craters on the Moon were made by asteroids, comets, and meteorites. There three types of craters, such as the simple impact crater, complex impact crater, and impact basin. There is no atmosphere on the Moon to protect it from the impacts. IMPACT CRATERS

INTERESTING FACT Did you know that only 59% of the Moon’s surface is visible from Earth. This happened because over time gravity slowed down the Moon’s rotation until it stopped.

In 1969, the United States' Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon on July 20, 1969. There have been a total of six manned landings between 1969 to 1972. MOON LANDING

BLUE MOON? A Blue Moon is the third full Moon in a season that has four full moons or the second full moon in one calendar month. A Blue Moon appears every two to three years.

HOW LONG IS A DAY ON THE MOON? A day on the moon is 27 days, 7 hours, and 43.2 minutes long (in earth time). This happens because of the gravitational pull between the earth and moon.
