Dissemination and exploitation - n° 7 Dissemination testbed u A dissemination testbed, called GriDis, has been deployed and maintained in order to provide a permanent infrastructure for tutorials and live demos. u Important contributions have been made by several members of other WPs. u The dissemination testbed, whose core components are hosted at CNR in Rome, has been adopted as the official platform for EDG tutorial road show. u It has also been used by the “Grid Café” initiative to develop and demonstrate some sample grid-enabled applications. u Grid accounts have been created on the GriDis testbed for some members of the “Grace” project for self-training purposes.

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 8 Local dissemination

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 9 Events organization/participation u WP11 staff contributed to the organization of 13 events during 2003 in one or more of the following forms: n attendance; n provision of dissemination material; n booth organization; n public talks; n live demos; n logistic organization. u About 1060 “official” EDG brochures distributed during public events, about 100 in face to face meetings (overall target was 1100). u Ad hoc flyers produced for particular events and/or demos.

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 10 Live demos u The dissemination testbed has been effectively used to demonstrate the project results. u 6 live demos held during 2003: n 14 May 2003, web-based live demo during the “6th EDG Conference” (Barcelona – Spain) n 22 May 2003, Perugia University (Perugia - Italy); n 19 June 2003, “Experts Day” of Surfnet GiGaPort (The Netherlands); n July 2003, Demo for Wolfgang Boch, head of unit for DG-INFSO- F2 “Complex Problem Solving”; n 1 October 2003, wizard-based job submission at the “German Grid Day” following the “7th EDG Conference”, (Heidelberg – Germany). n 1 December 2003, live demo for the “Grid Café” one-day event at the Microcosm museum of CERN, (Switzerland/France)

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 11 Tutorials u A major dissemination achievement with contributions from the whole project u GriDis testbed adopted as the official training facility. u Two formats: n Two full days with lectures and hands-on exercises n One day with only lectures

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 12 The tutorial road show  14 tutorials during 2003 in 12 different countries: Italy (including International Grid School of Computing - Vico Equense), Switzerland, France, Greece, Spain, Austria, Portugal, UK. Pakistan Japan (GGF7) USA (GGF8) Austria (CERN School of Computing 2003)  ~600 students trained  Tutorial material now included in some university level courses

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 13 Video material u About 50 hours of video material u About 980 photos u About 370 photos published on the dissemination portal

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 14 Support of the open software adoption and contribution to international standards

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 15 Software and documentation download website u The EDG software and documentation can be downloaded from the URL http://web.datagrid.cnr.it/pls/portal30/GRID.DYN_SOFTWARE.show. http://web.datagrid.cnr.it/pls/portal30/GRID.DYN_SOFTWARE.show u Software and Documentation repositories maintained by WP6 u The EDG software is also included in the Grid Technology Repository (http://gtr.globus.org).

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 16 Contributions to international standards u The DataGrid project contributed to the establishment of international standards in the following ways: n Participation to GGF activities: EDG members made substantial contributions to 16 GGF working and research groups. n Papers: ~90 papers have been published in the proceedings of international conferences or in high level scientific journals. n Inter-project collaborations: EDG established successful collaborations with DataTAG, CrossGrid, Gridstart, iVDGL, PPDG, GriPhyN, Internet2, Dante, UK GridMon and the Storage Resource Manager initiative. u An exhaustive report about the contributions to international standards can be found in D11.9 u Special issue of the “Journal of Grid Computing” dedicated to EDG outcomes.

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 17 Industrial deployment

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 18 European Grid Industry and Research Forum u The European DataGrid Industry and Research Forum is the result of the merger of the DataGrid and CrossGrid Industry and Research Fora u It now counts 283 members coming both from Industry and Research. Target was 280 u ~40% coming from Industry (target was 60%), mostly from the IT sector. u The majority of the subscriptions have been collected during events and conferences. u Work Package 11 has designed, developed and maintained the new “European Grid Industry and Research forum” website which includes an on line subscription form.

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 19 Industry and Research events u During 2003 WP11 supported the organization of the following two “European DataGrid Industry and Research Forum” events: n February 2003: Santiago de Compostela, Spain s within the framework of the “Across Grids Conference”; n June 2003: Barcelona, Spain s within the framework of the “6th EDG project conference”.

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 20 Industrial exploitation u Contacts have been established by staff with Industrial representatives of the following sectors: n automotive, n aerospace, n defence, n energy, n government n IT n pharmacy, n plastic industry, n microelectronics, u Formal collaboration agreement between CS-SI and CNRS-IN2P3. u Two new project based on EDG middleware started by CS-SI: Rugbi (large-scale analysis of proteins structure) and OpenPlast (design of plastic products). u Contacts established with “Polo Oncologico S. Raffaele” (Milan) which stimulted the proposal of the “e-Oncology” project. u Contacts ongoing with “Presidenza del Consiglio Italiano” to explore the possibility of applying Grid technology to Critical Infrastructure Protection.

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 21 Plans for Industrial exploitation u Two possible Industrial actors: users and providers. u The strategy of the the providers at the moment is to acquire expertise in grid computing and create “Grid operative divisions”. u Three possible (non mutually exclusive) business models: n Provide expertise (consultancy) n Develop/Provide grid-enabled applications n Provide grid infrastructure.

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 22 Lessons learned u Tutorials with hands-on practice, live demos and a rich web portal are effective dissemination instruments; u The deployment of a dedicated training facility (e.g. the dissemination testbed) is the only way to assure the availability of a testbed during tutorials and dissemination events. But … u The funding level for dissemination need to be carefully reviewed in order to keep pace with the interest that an important project like DataGrid can arouse: n Manpower and computing infrastructure need to be allocated in advance for tutorial activities. n The establishment of a network of point of contacts can be achieved only with the allocation of dedicated human resources.

Dissemination and exploitation - n° 23 Future and exploitation of the dissemination activity u The dissemination website will be archived and turned into a static repository which will be maintained by CNRS. u EDG results will remain available in the static repository. u All the dissemination experience acquired during the DataGrid project will be fed into the EGEE project.
