3 Basic Requirements Senator 1.The person must be 30 years of age. 2. The person must have been a resident of the US for nine years. 3.The person must be, when elected, an inhabitant of the State for which he/she shall be chosen. 4. US citizen

4 Basic Requirements: House of Representatives Must be at least twenty-five years old Must be a resident of the state they represent Must have been a U.S. citizen for at least seven years.

5 What is The Job of a Legislator? Lawmaking : Proposing, studying, discussing, and voting on legislation Appropriating money to state agencies and programs Creating, eliminating, and modifying U.S laws and programs

6 What is The Job of a Legislator? Representing : Serving constituents living in each district Functioning as a liaison between citizens and U.S government

7 What is The Job of a Legislator? Evaluating : Overseeing the work of departments and agencies funded by the Legislature Ensuring that laws are being carried out according to legislative intent Confirming the Presidental appointments and responding to vetoes

8 Speaker of the House Sets the Agenda Call the session into order Has the power to call on whomever they choose Selected by Majority party

10 Classic Model Step 1: Every Bill starts as an idea Step 2: Congressman writes bill and introduces to congress Step3: Debated in Committee (senate or house of representatives) Step 4: Sent either House of Representatives or Senate (depending on Committee) Step 5: Sent to the other legislator (House of Representatives or Senate) Step 6: Sent to the President (signed or veto)
