1  HAPPY WEDNESDAY  BT TT
G2 Computer B = Black Cat T= Tan Cat BT = Tabby Cat Mom = TT Dad = BT Bellwork: 1. Have out your Notecard Sticker Sheet. Lay out your notecards (definition side up) on your desk 5x4, “Sex-Linked Traits” needs to be top left card. 2. Write “Complete Q#2 on Page 84.” in your bellwork page Crossing a black cat with a tan cat produces a tabby cat (combination of black and tan). This is an example of incomplete dominance. Cross a tan cat with a tabby cat, what are the phenotypes of the offspring? If you wanted all tabby cats, what color cats would you want to breed? Shoulder Partner 3. Predict the phenotypic ratios of offspring when a homozygous white cow is crossed with a roan bull. R = Red W = White RW = Roan Dad = RW Mom = WW R W RW WW W W Phenotypic Ratio = 0 Red: 2 Roan: 2 White

6 How are multiple alleles inherited? Standard
Essential Question How are multiple alleles inherited? Standard B6F - Predict possible outcomes of genetic combinations such as Non-Mendelian Genetics. PG 83 Direct Instruction CHAMPS

7 The situation in which both alleles contribute to the phenotype is called codominance. In this case, the heterozygous phenotype looks like an equal expression of both homozygous phenotypes.

10 Many genes have more than two alleles and are therefore said to have multiple alleles. This does not mean that an individual can have more than two alleles. It only means that more than two possible alleles exist in a population.

11 Traits controlled by two or more genes are said to be polygenic traits
Traits controlled by two or more genes are said to be polygenic traits. Polygenic means “having many genes”.

12 The characteristics of organisms are not only determined by the genes it inherits. Characteristics are determined by interactions between genes and the environment.

13 Practice Problems

14 AA AB AO BO A B A O A = Type A B = Type B AB = Type AB O = Type O
Table Group 1. If a man with blood type AB marries a woman heterozygous for type A, what is the probability that their child will be type B. A B A = Type A B = Type B AB = Type AB O = Type O Dad = AB Mom = AO AA AB AO BO A O 25 % chance of Type B

15 AB A- B- OO O B ? A O ? A = Type A B = Type B AB = Type AB O = Type O
Shoulder Partner 2. A mother has type A blood and a father has type B blood. If their baby has type O blood, what is the genotype of the parents? O B ? A = Type A B = Type B AB = Type AB O = Type O Dad = BO or BB Mom = AO or AA AB A- B- OO A O ? Dad = BO Mom = AO

16 Phenotypes - 50% Type A: 50% Type B
Independent 3. Use a Punnett square to show the possible genotypes and phenotypes for blood type of the offspring of two parents, one with blood type O and one with blood type AB. O O A = Type A B = Type B AB = Type AB O = Type O Dad = OO Mom = AB AO BO A B Genotypes - 50% AO: 50% BO Phenotypes - 50% Type A: 50% Type B

17 Jane – Type O Mary – Type A
Whole Class 4. Two women gave birth to girls in the same hospital at the same time. The nurses think they may have accidentally switched the babies’ name tags and given the babies to the wrong parents. One baby, Jane, is type O. The other baby, Mary, is blood type A. The father in one set of parents, the Reds, is blood type A, and the mother is type B. The father in the other set of parents, the Greens, is blood type AB, and the mother is type O. Figure out which baby belongs to which parents. Show your work and reasoning. Reds Greens A B A - A = Type A B = Type B AB = Type AB O = Type O Red Dad = AA or AO Red Mom = BB or BO Green Dad = AB Green Mom = OO AO BO AB B- A- -- O B AO O AO - OO Jane – Type O Mary – Type A
