13 HW: Wizard Genetics PG 75 Let’s Grade! Small Group CHAMPS

14 1 Point Each HO HE HO HE HO HO HO HO HE HE HO HO
1. For each genotype below, indicate whether it is heterozygous (he) OR homozygous (ho). BB Mm PP Dd ff pp Pp FF Bb mm MM DD Which of the genotypes above would be considered purebred? Which of the genotypes above would be considered hybrid? 2. Determine the phenotype for each genotype using the information provided about Harry Potter. Non-parseltongue is dominant to parseltongue. PP Pp pp Dark hair is dominant to red hair. DD Dd dd 3. For each phenotype, give the genotypes that are possible for Draco Malfoy. Black hair (B) is dominant to white hair (b). Black = White = Muggle (M) is dominant to magic (m). *Muggle means non-magical* Muggle = Magic = 1 Point Each HO HE HO HE HO HO HO HO HE HE HO HO BB, PP, ff, pp, FF, mm, MM, DD 2 Points Mm, Dd, Pp, Bb 2 Points Non-parsel Non-parsel Parseltongue 1 Point Each Dark Hair Dark Hair Red Hair BB, Bb 2 Points bb 1 Point MM, Mm 2 Points mm 1 Point

15 5 Points D = Dark Hair d = Red Hair DAD = Dd MOM = dd D d Dd dd d d Dd
4. Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley recently married. Harry is hybrid for his dark hair, while Ginny is a redhead. Create a Punnett square to show the possibilities that would result if Harry and Ginny had children. HINT: see question #2! D = Dark Hair d = Red Hair DAD = Dd MOM = dd 5 Points D d Dd dd d d Dd dd

16 Phenotypes = Dark Hair, Red Hair
A. List the possible genotypes AND phenotypes for their children. B. What are the chances of a child with dark hair? out of OR % C. What are the chances of a child with red hair? out of OR % Genotypes = Dd, dd Phenotypes = Dark Hair, Red Hair 4 Points 2 4 50 2 Points 2 4 50 2Points

17 5 Points F = Fire-breathing f = Non Fire-breathing DAD = Ff MOM = Ff F
5. Hagrid found two baby dragons in the forest. Both are heterozygous for their fire-breathing ability, which is the dominant trait. Create a Punnett square to show the possibilities that would result if these two dragons had children. Use F for the dominant allele and f for the recessive. F = Fire-breathing f = Non Fire-breathing DAD = Ff MOM = Ff 5 Points F f FF Ff F f Ff ff

18 Phenotypes = Fire-breathing, Non Fire-breathing
A. List the possible genotypes AND phenotypes for their children. B. What are the chances of a fire-breathing baby? out of OR % C. What are the chances of a non-fire-breather? out of OR % 5 Points Genotypes = FF, Ff, ff Phenotypes = Fire-breathing, Non Fire-breathing 3 4 75 2 Points 1 4 25 2 Points

19 5 Points B = Black Hair b = White Hair DAD = bb MOM = Bb b b Bb Bb B b
6. Draco Malfoy is purebred for his white hair, which is a recessive trait. He is very proud of this trait and wants to pass it on to his children, but he married a girl who is heterozygous for her black hair. Create a Punnett square to show the possibilities that would result if Draco and his new bride had children. B = Black Hair b = White Hair DAD = bb MOM = Bb 5 Points b b Bb Bb B b bb bb

20 Phenotypes = Black Hair, White Hair
A. List the possible genotypes AND phenotypes for their children. B. What are the chances of a child with white hair? C. What are the chances of a child with black hair? D. 4 Points Genotypes = Bb, bb Phenotypes = Black Hair, White Hair 50% 1 Points 50% 1 Points YES! Any with white hair would be purebred because they would have 2 of the same recessive allele. 3 Points

21 5 Points B = Black Hair b = White Hair DAD = Bb MOM = Bb B b BB Bb B b
7. Assume that one of Draco’s sons, who is heterozygous for black hair, marries a girl that is also heterozygous. Create a Punnett square to show the possibilities that would result if they had children. B = Black Hair b = White Hair DAD = Bb MOM = Bb 5 Points B b BB Bb B b Bb bb

22 Phenotypes = Black Hair, White Hair
A. List the possible genotypes AND phenotypes for their children. B. What are the chances of a child with white hair? C. What are the chances of a child with black hair? 5 Points Genotypes = BB, Bb, bb Phenotypes = Black Hair, White Hair 25% 1 Points 75% 1 Points

23 5 Points M= Muggle m = Magic DAD = mm MOM = MM m m Mm Mm M M Mm Mm
8. Neville Longbottom settled down a few years ago with a nice Muggle girl, Susie, and had a baby. No one in Susie’s family has ever had magical abilities, but Little Longbottom is showing signs of being a wizard! Susie is now convinced that there was a mix-up at the hospital. Create a Punnett square to help answer the questions below. M= Muggle m = Magic DAD = mm MOM = MM 5 Points m m Mm Mm M M Mm Mm

24 A. List the possible genotypes AND phenotypes for their children.
2 Points Genotypes = Mm Phenotypes = Muggle YES! Susie has only dominant genes, so her children would all be Muggle (except mutations, recessive genes passed down, etc…) 3 Points

25 Score their paper, give it back to them. 
9. Harry Potter is a parseltongue, which means that he can speak to snakes. No one in his family has ever had this ability, however. If you didn’t know where Harry’s ability came from, and assuming that there was no mistake at the hospital and Harry was not adopted, how could you GENETICALLY explain it? Be specific and use complete sentences Any reasonable response will do having to do with either mutations or recessive genes passed on without showing in the older generations. 4 Points Score their paper, give it back to them. 
