6 Mendel’s assumptions about segregation predicted a phenotypic ratio of 3:1. Mendel’s assumptions about segregation predicted a genotypic ratio of 1:2:1.

7 The fact that genes that segregate independently do not influence each other’s inheritance is known as independent assortment. The principle of independent assortment states that genes for different traits can segregate independently during the formation of gametes. Independent assortment helps account for the many genetic variations observed in many organisms.
