Lesson 17. For the First Time II

Lesson A

A. For the First Time- Chorus Go: For 10 points, write the answer to this question on a Music Slip: What is the purpose of a key signature? Leave it out to show. Login right away and practice your A Scale with the correct fingerings. Work to get both hands at the same time. LEARN: Use the Finale software lyrics pen and enter the note names to learn the Chorus part to For the First Time.= 10 points. SHOW: When you’re ready, raise your hand and show the correct note names for 10 points. When shown, learn the chords.

Lesson B

B. 1 st and 2 nd Endings GO: Start Lesson B right away for 10 points. LEARN: Use Lesson B and the Finale software to learn how 1 st and 2 nd endings work for 10 points. SHOW: For 10 points, show that you understand by playing the Chorus part while playing the 1 st and 2 nd endings correctly.

B. 1 st and 2 nd Endings Look below at the 1. and 2. brackets above the measures. These are 1 st and 2nd endings brackets. The double dots are repeat signs. They “bounce” you backward. In the first ending, you will see a backward- facing repeat sign. This means to go back either to the beginning OR until you see a forward-facing repeat sign. Can you find the forward-facing repeat sign?

B. 1 st and 2 nd Endings Careful: When you repeat, you don’t play the first ending again. You skip the first ending and jump to the second ending. MUSIC SLIP: Answer this question on a Music Slip and leave it out for me to see. What do you think is the purpose for 1 st and 2 nd endings? Why doesn’t the composer just write it all out?

Lesson C

C. For the First Time Instrumental GO: For 10 points, immediately read all of Lesson C. Then, open the For the First Time Instrumental Sheet Music & use the lyrics pen to enter the note names. LEARN: For 10 points, use the Finale software and the note names you entered to learn this section. Be sure to check The Shoulder Rule. SHOW: For 10 points, before the end of the period, raise your hand to show the instrumental part in the correct octave.

C. Shoulder Rule You may ask the question, “How do I know where to place my hands to find the first note?” Remember The Shoulder Rule! Which A is this first note? Since this note is just outside of the right hand staff, your note is just outside your right shoulder.

C. Key Signature When naming notes, you MUST enter the sharp symbol after the letter!

Lesson D

D. Peer and Self-Assessment- For the First Time GO: You have 10 minutes: On a Music Slip, write the following: For the First Time, Intro/Verse, Chorus, Instrumental Parts. Play through each part of the song and give yourself a score from 1-10 based upon how you feel you did. Leave that out for me to see. All for 10 points. LEARN: For 10 points, you will exercise proper practice etiquette while you will work with a Peer to fix any issues you may have with any section of the song that is lower than a 10.
