1 NT openings Review and intro to competitive bidding

What does 1 NT opening mean 1 NT opening shows 15 to 17 high card points Balanced Hand No singletons or voids No 2 doubletons No need to have stoppers in all suits E.g.: S AJx, H KQ9x, D KQx, C xx : open 1NT Prefer to open 1N if hand satisfies above criteria, even if hand fits some other opening bid

Responses Pass = Weak balanced hand, <7 hcp 2D/2H/2S = 5+ cards in bid suit, <8 hcp Sign-off, asking opener to pass 2N = Good 8 or 9 points, invite to 3N 3 of a suit = 6 card suit or good 5 card suit Game force, possible slam try in that suit 4H/4S = To play, 6+ cards 2C = Stayman, asks opener to bid 4 card major suit if she has one

Rebids by opener After 3 of a suit Bid 3N with no support for responder’s suit With support, cue-bid a suit where you have a control (A or K) If unable to cue-bid, raise to 4 of the suit, with some ruffing value After Stayman Bid 2M with a 4 card major (with both, start with 2H) Bid 2D without a 4 card major

Rebids by responder After Stayman Opener bids 2M 3M = game invite 2N = game invite (shows other major suit) 3N = to play (shows other major suit) 3C = sign-off in clubs (long clubs, and few points) 3D = shows 5+ cards in bid suit, with 4 of the other major, forcing to game Opener bids 2D 2N = game invite 3N = to play 3C = sign-off in clubs (long clubs, and few points) 3D = shows 5+ cards in bid suit with 4 of one major 2M = invitational with 5 cards in bid major
