Converting Units of Measure

M. 4b Convert units within a given measurement system to include length, weight/mass, and volume. (DOK 1) Today you will work with converting length in the metric system. This is important because sometimes a carpenter may have to convert units when building a house or building. Can you think of other uses for this?

One’s and Two’s All number ones write down the memory aid for the metric system and what each word stands for. All number twos explain how to use it to convert units of measure.

What did you write? Who wants to share what they wrote? Did you all get this correct?

“Mighty King Henry Died Unbelievably Drinking Chocolate Milk” Mega Kilo Hecto Deka (Unit Base) Deci Centi Milli Meter Liter Gram

The metric unit for length is meter. Can you say all the different units of length from the memory aid? (megameter, kilometer, hectometer, dekameter, meter, decimeter, centimeter, and millimeter)

Common Metric Conversions for Length 1 centimeter (cm) = 10 millimeters (mm) 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm) = 1,000 millimeters (mm) 1,000 meters (m) = 1 kilometer (km)

Work the following examples with me. How many centimeters are in 5 meters? 5 meters = 500 centimeters

Example #2 Convert 89 millimeters to centimeters. 89 millimeters = 8.9 centimeters

Example #3 76,500 millimeters = ____ meters 76,500 millimeters = 76.5 meters

Example #4 Convert 7.3 kilometers to meters. 7.3 kilometers = 7,300 meters

Example #5 How many centimeters are in 3.2 kilometers? 3.2 kilometers = 320,000 centimeters

Your Turn!!! 1.2,900 millimeters = ____ centimeters 2.754 centimeters = ____ meters 3.4 kilometers = ____ meters 4.3 kilometers = ____ millimeters 5.7.65 meters = ____ centimeters 290 7.54 4,000 3,000,000 765

Mix it up!!! Are the units in this question for measuring volume, mass/weight, or length? Are these units English or metric? Which memory aid is needed to solve this one? 1) 49 milligrams = ____ grams 2) 18 gallons = ____ quarts 3) 176 cups = ____ gallons 4) 9 kilometers = ____ meters 5) 72 yards = ____ feet 6) 88 pints = ____ quarts 7) 4.6 liters = ____ milliliters

1) Jason is fencing in his yard. He needs 234 feet of fencing material. The building supply store has fencing panels that are 2 yards each. If he uses the panels, how many will he need to purchase? Solution: Students must first convert the two measurements to the same unit. There are two possible ways of working the problem. Convert 234 feet to yards by dividing 234 by 3, which equals 78 yards. Then divide the 78 yards by 2 (panels are 2 yards each) which equals 39. Jason needs 39 panels. Convert 2 yards to feet by multiplying by 3, which means that each panel is 6 feet long. Then divide 234 feet by 6 feet which equals 39. Jason needs 39 panels.

Independent Practice: (DOK 2) If time allows: Arrange students in groups of two, three or four. Each group will create four original word problems dealing with measurement. (Two conversions from small to large and two from large to small.) Divide a sheet of paper into four pieces and write one problem on each piece with work shown on the back. Exchange your cards with another group and practice solving the other groups’ problems.

Closure: We have finished the objective and now will be ready to practice. State what you have learned today.

Homework: Work page 354 numbers 6-14 and page 356 numbers 9-20 in the Envision textbook.
