Converting Units of Measure

M. 4b Convert units within a given measurement system to include length, weight/mass, and volume. (DOK 1) Has your homework been checked? Let’s go over it.

Length Who knows the units of length and How many inches are in one foot? How many feet are in one yard How many inches are in one yard? If you do not know, look at this foot long ruler and yard stick.

Common English Conversions for Length 1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in) 1 yard (yd) = 3 feet (ft) 1 yard (yd) = 36 inches (in) 1 mile (mi) = 5,280 feet (ft) 1 mile (mi) = 1,760 yards (yd)

English system memory aids: “Sally Likes to Dally” Small to Large Divide “Lilly Sings with Milly” Large to Small Multiply

Work the following examples with me. How many inches are in 5 feet? Conversion Rate: 1 ft = 12 in “Lilly Sings with Milly” Large to Small Multiply So, 5 x 12 = 60 5 ft = 60 in

Example #2 27 feet = ____ yards Conversion Rate: 1 yd = 3 ft “Sally Likes to Dally” Small to Large Divide So, 27 ÷ 3 = 9 27 ft = 9 yd

Example #3 How many feet are in 96 inches? Conversion Rate: 1 ft = 12 in “Sally Likes to Dally” Small to Large Divide So, 96 ÷ 12 = 8 96 in = 8 ft

Example #4 Convert 7 yards to inches and feet. Conversion Rate: 1 yd = 36 in 1 yd = 3 ft “Lilly Sings with Milly” Large to Small Multiply So, 7 x 36 = 252 7 yd = 252 in And, 7 x 3 = 21 7 yd = 21 ft

Example #5 How many yards and feet are in 8 miles? Conversion Rate: 1 mile = 1,760 yards 1 mile = 5,280 feet “Lilly Sings with Milly” Large to Small Multiply So, 8 x 1,760 = 14,080 8 m = 14,080 yd And, 8 x 5,280 = 42,240 8 m = 42,240 feet

Independent Practice: (DOK 1) 1.50,160 ft = ____ mile 2.____ ft = 7.5 mile 3.3 yd = ____ in 4.____ in = 1 mile 9.5 39,600 108 63,360

Closure: Restate what you have learned in your own words.
