5. Unit 5 Non-communicable diseases represent the causes of the majority of deaths and disabilities in most developed countries. Non-communicable diseases include cancer, diabetes, obesity, depression, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, 0steoporosis, and chronic arthritis just to mention a few. Public health is concerned with not only the mortality caused by these conditions, but also the increased burden of health care cost upon society.

6. News on Non- Communicable Diseases The World Health Organization reports almost two-thirds of all global deaths are due to heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. The World Health Statistics Report provides information on the state of health in 194 countries. Non-communicable diseases are not just a problem of wealthy countries. The World Health Organization says they mainly affect people in poorer countries, of whom half die before they reach the age of 70. 8. Unit 6 Communicable diseases have historically been the major cause of death in the world. Today, in developing countries, this is still true. However, in developed countries communicable diseases are most often linked with individual behaviors and socioeconomic disadvantaged individuals.

9. Unit 6 Riegelman (2010) has provided us with detailed information about the tools public health professionals use to address the burden of communicable diseases. Using what you have learned through our lessons this week, address all the following questions: What has been found to be effective public health tools in dealing with an outbreak of tuberculosis (TB), Whooping Cough, HIV/AIDS? What has been found to be effective tools in dealing with malaria, Dengue Fever and other mosquito borne diseases? When isolation, quarantine or case finding is necessary to prevent the spread of disease, how can public health professionals ensure that the rights of those infected are protected?
