2 Who is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? ► Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was an African American civil rights activist that dedicated his life and time towards the betterment of blacks everywhere.

3 Quotes from "I Have a Dream” ► "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." ► "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'" ► "I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood."

5 His Early life: ► Martin Luther King, Jr., was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the son of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. King's father was born "Michael King," and Martin Luther King, Jr., was originally named "Michael King, Jr.," until the family traveled to Europe in 1934 and visited Germany. His father soon changed both of their names to Martin Luther in honor of the German Protestant leader Martin Luther. He had an older sister, Willie Christine King, and a younger brother Alfred Daniel Williams King. King sang with his church choir at the 1939 Atlanta premiere of the movie Gone with the Wind. ► King married Coretta Scott, on June 18, 1953, on the lawn of her parents' house in her hometown of Heiberger, Alabama. King and Scott had four children; Yolanda King, Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King, and Bernice King. King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama when he was twenty-five years old in 1954.

6 The early civil rights movement ► In the early civil rights movement one by one people started to rise to fight against segregation, prejudice, and racism. People participated in acts of protests, boycotts, etc., to start the fight for their equality.

7 Dr. King’s contribution: ► Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made one of the greatest contribution in the civil rights movement, his life. He fought for blacks rights knowing that each and everyday his life was in danger, yet he had a strong belief for equality for his people and he still fought for it.
