51 The Cherokee government was one large confederation broken down into seven clans. Each clan had a name such as wolf, deer, or bird. Each local Cherokee village had its own government. There was a round, seven-sided council house in the middle of each village and this is where they met to make decisions. The government was a democracy and the women were also able to take part in the decision-making process.
