NSF Cybersecurity Funding Opportunities Anita Nikolich National Science Foundation Program Director, Advanced Cyberinfrastructure September 2015

2 Cybersecurity Innovation for Cyberinfrastructure (CICI) Activities that impact the security of science, engineering and education environments Target community is operational infrastructure  FY15 $11M/13 awards. FY16 $ TBD.  FY15 Areas:  Cybersecurity Center of Excellence ($5M award)  Secure Data Provenance ($500K awards)  Secure Architecture Design ($500K awards)  FY16 Areas TBD. Anticipated due date Feb 2016. Look for it in December 2015

3 Transition to Practice (TTP)  Supports later stage activities in the research and development lifecycle such as prototyping and experimental deployment  Review Criteria:  Impact on deployed environment  Value in terms of needed capability and potential impact across the NSF community  Feasibility, utility, and interoperability in operation  Project plan including goals, milestones, demonstration and evaluation  Tangible metrics to evaluate effectiveness of capabilities developed

4 What’s an Example of TTP or CICI Project?  Bro IDS  ShellOS Malware Detection – UNC-Chapel Hill deploys in production. More accurate and useful than expensive legacy appliances.  Mini Science DMZ for Scientific Instruments – NEW!  Shared Intelligence Platform for Protecting our National Cyberinfrastructure – NEW!

5 Why Should CC*DNI PI’s Care?  Hundreds of promising research and operations ideas in this community – get NSF funding to develop your idea and try it out on a small or large scale  Possibility of additional funding from other agencies!  Early adopters of prototypes accept some risk but can get NSF funding to do so and give feedback to PI’s

6 How Can NSF Help? Tell me your biggest security challenge – lack of tools? Lack of people? Lack of time to think about security? Talk to me this week or email me: anikolic@nsf.gov
