3 GEOSCIENCES IS READY Cyberinfrastructure (CI) is part of the research fabric of Geosciences Geoscientists are sophisticated CI users and creators NSF and other agencies support substantial infrastructure and research that will form the foundation of EarthCube Community is connected by the science and collegial relationships

4 What is EarthCube?

5 Goal of Earth Cube to transform the conduct of research in geosciences by supporting community-based cyberinfrastructure to integrate data and information for knowledge management across the Geosciences.

6 What Is Knowledge Management It is a human-centric context for the scientific enterprise Elements : Easy Use and Discovery of data and information Ease of collaboration and training to create knowledge Access through open architecture and interworkability Shared community vision/ value system The community will strategically connect these elements over time for the geosciences The use of existing or emerging technologies will moderate the pace of development

7 What Needs To Be Done? Integrate data, tools and communities through cyberinfrastructure Establish a governance mechanism that is inclusive and adopted by the community Utilize current and emerging technologies to create transparent infrastructure for the geosciences community

9 EARTHCUBE ASSUMPTIONS The geosciences community is ready to take on the EarthCube challenge Community will start self-organizing prior to the EarthCube Charrette Current and emerging technology will help achieve the convergence envisioned for EarthCube A broad range of expertise and resources must be engaged to shape EarthCube

10 EARTHCUBE TIMELINE On-line Community Information: (August to November, 2011) EarthCube Charrette: (Early November, 2011) Post Charrette: (Mid-November to April, 2012) EarthCube Ideas/Lab: (Tentatively Early May, 2012) Prototype Development: (May to December 2013) Fully integrated geosciences infrastructure: (2014-2022):

11 Preparing for the Charrette to be held November 1-4, 2011 in the Washington, DC Area Pre-Charrette contributions by the community are essential

12 Pre-Charrette Organization (August – September) Second WebEx on Aug. 22 NSF seeks input from wide range of sources Individuals, inst./org., representatives of scientific groups or communities Facilities and managers of CI endeavors Industry, Federal Labs., Federal Agencies, and International Partners NSF will establish on-line resources and forums to Gather community inputs/requirements Facilitate partnerships and collaborations Encourage submission of approaches to the EarthCube design

13 Pre-Charrette Organization (August – September) NSF will facilitate input in three areas User Requirements Technology Solutions EarthCube Design Approaches

14 User Requirements Forums and questionnaire are important to understanding user requirements and unmet needs They test the scope and functionality of proposed approaches to EarthCube Inputs received on-line will complement expertise at the Charrette The aim is to understand what would improve your ability to conduct research in the present and in 10 years.

15 Technology Solutions Innovative CI solutions to data integration or the scientific process New and untested ideas as well as established CI that have worked for communities are welcome Solutions may come from individuals, communities, industry, academia, international groups, and federal agencies Short (up to 6 pages) white papers can be submitted

16 EarthCube Design Position papers on the design and implementation of an EarthCube approach (no more than 10 pages) Plans need to address: Vision for EarthCube Community Based Governance model Conceptual CI Architecture Design and Implementation Process Operations and Sustainability Model Online forum will allow for comments on approaches and these will be complemented by comments and suggestions during the Charrette

17 Charrette Process Plenary Session provide the opportunity to discuss user requirements refine approaches and designs for EarthCube develop partnerships and new collaborations Remote participation and real-time comments system will be available Summary Session Comments from NSF, facilitators, and participants on process NSF provides guidance on post-Charrette activities
