2 2 THE ORIGINS OF REMEMBRANCE DAY * At 11 am on November 11 th 1918 World War 1 ended. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back. Having suffered heavy losses and their defeat being inevitable the Germans called for armistice (suspension of fighting) to secure peace between the countries. They then accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. * From then on November 11 th was known as Armistice Day. But in November 1997 The Governor General, Sir William Deane, declared the 11 th of November Remembrance Day.

3 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF REMEMBRANCE DAY * Remembrance Day started out as a day to honour the brave soldiers that died during World War 1. It has grown in significance to honour all the men and women who were in the war. * Remembrance Day also celebrates the end of World War 1 as a day to remember that the pain and death that occurred during the war is over. * In the 1 st World War over 70 million people were recruited and between 7 and 13 million people were killed at least 1 third of them with no known grave the Allied Nations chose this day to commemorate their war dead.

4 WHAT HAPPENS ON REMEMBRANCE DAY * At 11am on the 11 th day of the 11 th month there is a minute of silence to remember the men and women who died for Australia ’ s and other countries ’ causes during the war. * Over the years the minute of silence has changed slightly. Originally it was a two minutes but eventually near the 79 th anniversary 1997 it became a minute of silence and to this day it remains 1 minute. * The minute of silence has been a tradition ever since 1919 on the first anniversary of armistice. The 1st anniversary of armistice 1919. Remembrance Day 2009.

5 WHO PARTICIPATES IN REMEMBRANCE DAY * All the Allied countries participate in Remembrance Day along with all the other countries that had men and women fighting in the war. All the countries that fought in the war celebrate Remembrance Day and honour the passing of their dead.
