Jump Start – In Your Notebook… Complete the following questions with your test: 1.How does your class compare with the others? 2.Did you meet or exceed the goal? Why or why not? 3.What areas do you need to improve in? 4.How will you do that?

“Hey—This Place is Pretty Cool” Gold & Silver ??? – Sounds like MERCANTILISM! Charter – permission to establish a colony Rats & Humans = STARVING TIME

“Hail to the King” Government in which people have a say…REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT. PARLIAMENT – the law making body of England.

“You Don’t Mind if We … Uh…” Mayflower Compact ??? – 1620 Examples of Self-Government: House of Burgesses, Mayflower Compact, Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

“We’re Doing Just Fine, Thanks” Leaving us alone to make decisions was SALUTARY NEGLECT. Foreshadowing of one THOMAS PAINE – We CAN take care of ourselves!

“A Raw Deal” Colonies were meant to benefit the MOTHER COUNTRY (England)! Colonies = $$$ Why was England stepping in? More $$$ for the King!

“Looking for a Fast Buck?” French and Indian War resulted in lots of LAND but also lots of $$$ owed (DEBT). Fast Money ? TAXES or TARIFFS on imported/exported goods

“Don’t Tax Me, Bro” Taxes – WE don’t need your taxes! Problem’s Solution=BOYCOTT all British goods Stamp Act Townshend Act Quartering Act Tea Act More civil disobedience=More strict rules

“Enough is Enough!” Thomas Paine’s new idea…INDEPENDENCE! July 4, 1776 – Declaration is passed but the war has only just begun! Patriots win the war, but a new problem emerges…What kind of Government should we have? We need a solution…FAST!

Quick! We need a New Government! MONARCHY Hail to the King! (or Queen) One person is in charge. This person makes all the rules, enforces the rules, and decides when someone has broken the rules. ANARCHY Everyone for themselves! (Mob Rule) Nobody is in charge, so there are no rules. Everyone makes up their own rules. There is nothing to be enforced or decided. DIRECT DEMOCRACY Let’s all Vote! (On everything. All of the time.) Everyone gets a vote on what the rules should be, how to enforce them, and whether or not someone broke them. Everyone makes decisions voting. REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY Power to the People! (Without so much work.) Everyone votes for a small group of people to represent them. The small group makes all the rules, enforces them, and decides whether their broken. Things to Think About: How will rights be protected? What will life be like for people? Can anyone stop the person in charge from breaking the law? Will people have a say? Any other possible problems?

MONARCHY One person makes all the decisions; quick & easy. You know who to ask for help. King isn’t elected, so no political battles. Pros One person makes ALL the decisions. A bad monarch could hurt a lot of people. Cons

ANARCHY/MOB RULE ANARCHY/MOB RULE People get to do whatever they want. Maximum freedom Pros No responsibilities to get things done Nothing to protect our rights. No organization or structure Cons

DIRECT DEMOCRACY Everyone gets a say on everything. People are in control. If they disagree, they talk it out and vote. Pros The size of the country can increase their issues, and voting takes time. If majority doesn’t like a group, that group could be treated unfairly. Cons

REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY People don’t have to be directly involved in gov’t. People can choose skilled representatives. People have a say. Pros Unpopular groups could still be treated unfairly. Might give representatives too much power. Representatives might not want to do what the people want. Cons
