1 Q#1/ 2 New Taxes b/c they couldn’t pay for the French and Indian war so they made taxes on imports to the colonies (disrupts Mercantilism). The British had left the colonists alone (salutary neglect) and so the colonists were not use to this form of taxation. How did tension escalate - Parliament passes a series of taxes (Sugar, Stamp and Townsend Acts) which causes the colonists to organize in their opposition to this tax. This opposition becomes more and more violent over time (Tea party  Boston Massacre)

2 #3 They did not understand this argument b/c Parliament argues that they are a representative Body, but in GB only a limited # of people can vote… but the colonists argue that they are not represented accordingly (the local colonial gov’ts had a more responsive body)

3 #4, #5 Ideas of the declaration are based on natural rights of individuals – grievances were that these rights had been taken away (examples of rights include taxing the colonists without cause, arresting people without cause, quartering soldiers, etc…) What changed.. Not much. Loyalists, slaves, N.A. are abandoned by the British. Women were seen as ‘republican mothers’ but given no rights

4 #7 Accomplish = separate US from British rule, and inspired other countries to rebel against absolute authority (Kings/ Queens) #8 Articles of Confederation created a weak federal gov’t that could not solve any of the nations problems. (Shay’s Rebellion is a prime example of this)
