Employers and employees have key roles to play in order to prevent work-related accidents and diseases * Prevention – how to protect yourself, what to do in the even of an accident, and knowledge of hazardous substances * Employees – rights, duties, and the complaint resolution process * Employers – responsibilities, supervision and training, and health and safety committees * Compliance Policy – measures to ensure that employers and employees fulfill their duties

5. * The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System is Canada’s national hazard communication standard * The key elements of the system are cautionary labeling of containers of WHMIS “controlled products”, the provision of material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and worker education and training programs

7. * First Aid training is not mandatory for all employees in the workplace, but, unlike most other types of safety training, these skills and knowledge are also applicable to an individual’s daily life * Employees would be prepared for any situation * Hurt employee/customer * Knowing what to do in these situations can be the difference between someone living or dying

8. * It takes the brain 6 minutes to die once oxygen is cut off * It can take a person as little as 5 minutes to bleed to death * Bones that are not set may never hold weight * Cuts that are not cleaned can become infected * In the minutes after a trauma, how the body is treated can make a world of difference to the outcome
