1 Create a list of the basic life functions of living things.
Life Functions are the activities that are necessary for an organism to carry out in order to survive.

2 INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
1. Identify the structures in the Vorticella 2. Define the basic life functions of all organisms. 3. Explain how the Vorticella carries out its life functions.

3 The life functions include ingestion, digestion, growth, transport, excretion, respiration, locomotion and sensitivity. The Vorticella a unicellular organism like protozoan, carries out all of its life functions within a single cell The Vorticella is easier to observe than other protozoans because it is attached to a substrate VOCABULARY WORD: sessile- lives attached to substrate GUESS THE AIM???

4 AIM: How do unicellular protozoans carery out their life functions?
Activity- label diagram of paramecium, euglena and ameba

5 UNICELLULAR ORGANISM ACTIVITY. Describe locomotion on assigned organism
Life Function Ameba paramecium Euglena Locomotion Pseudopods Cilia Flagellum

6 Vorticella LIFE FUNCTIONS
Use Diagram of Vorticella-handout Setup a structure and function chart

7 KEY QUESTIONS HOW does Vorticella ingest its food?
How does Vorticella move about? How does vorticella digest food? How does vorticella Reproduce? How does vorticella Control its Growth? How does vorticella Breathe? How does vorticella Excrete wastes? How does vorticella Get rid of excess salt? How does vorticella defend itself against predators?

8 Vorticella STRUCTURE FUNCTION with brief definition CILIA MOUTH
FOOD VACUOLE CYTOPLASM MICRONUCLEUS and MACRONUCLEUS CELL MEMBRANE CONTRACTILE VACUOLE STALK

9 structure function Cilia ingestion mouth Ingestion-taking in food Food vacuole Digestion-breakdown food cytoplasm Transport-movement of materials throughout the cell Micronucleus macronucleus Reproduction-DNA and chromosomes to make more cells Growth- control center/DNA controls an increase in cell size Cell membrane Respiration-gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide Contractile vacuole excretion-eliminates cell wastes Osmoregulation-controls salt and water balance stalk Sensitivity/defense- contraction of stalk due to external stimuli

10 SUMMARY The Vorticella is a unicellular, ciliated aquatic protozoan that carries out its life functions within a single cell. Individual organelles have specific functions to help carry out life. The nucleus controls the cell/organisms activities for survival.

11 SUMMARY QUIZ 1. T or F. Correct for full credit.
The Vorticella moves about by cilia. 2. Unicellular organisms use which organelle for digestion. A. cell membrane B. food vacuole C. contractile vacuole D. nucleus 3. Explain the difference on how euglena, paramecium and ameba INGEST food. Create a chart.
