1 Monteleone Junior High Preparing for High School!

2 HIGH SCHOOL VOCABULARY  PREREQUISITE – A requirement that is necessary before taking a class.  ELECTIVE – An optional course in the school’s curriculum.  CARNEGIE UNIT – A unit awarded for passing year long class. Semester classes are worth ½ unit. Year classes are worth 1 unit.  GPA – Grade Point Average  GRADING SCALE – Method the teacher uses to calculate your letter grade.

3 GRADING SCALE 100 – 93 A 92 – 85 B 84 – 75 C 74 – 67 D 0 – 66 F  Exams are worth 20% of your grade!  1 st 9 weeks grade & 2 nd 9 weeks grade are averaged to get your semester grade.  Your semester grade must be at least a 67% to earn a ½ credit for that class.  At the end of the school year, you will earn one full credit per course.

4 GRADE CLASSIFICATION  Sophomore – 5 units  Junior – 11 units  Senior – 17 units  Graduate – 24 units  You can earn 3.5 units per semester  (7.0 units per year)

5 (GPA) Grade Point Average An average of the grades you receive in all of your classes for a period of time. Calculated by letter grade. A = 4 points, B = 3 points, C = 2 points, D = 1 point (Sometimes Honors, Gifted and/or AP classes will use a 5 point scale). Semester GPA – only includes the classes you took that semester. Overall GPA – includes ALL the classes you take in your high school career (even the ones you fail). Other types of GPA – Athletic, TOPS, etc.

6 DIPLOMAS! TOPS UNIVERSITY DIPLOMA REQUIREMENT  Meets minimum requirements to enter a four year university (like LSU, SLU, ULL, etc.) JUMP START TOPS TECH ( CAREER DIPLOMA)  Career Diploma  Meets requirements for a career/technical diploma in a trade.

7 TOPS University Diploma  English – 4 Units  Math – 4 Units  Science – 4 Units  Social Studies – 4 Units  Health & PE – 2 Units  Foreign Language – 2 Units  Art – 1 Unit  Electives – 3 Units  TOTAL – 24 Units

8 Jump Start TOPS Tech (Career Diploma)  English – 4 Units  Math – 4 Units  Science – 2 Units  Social Studies – 2 Units  Health & PE – 2 Units  Jump Start Electives – 9 Units  TOTAL – 23 Units

9 TOPS – What is it?  Tuition Opportunity Program for Students  “...a comprehensive program of state scholarships and one of the most innovative and progressive student assistance programs in the nation.” The state offers a scholarship that pays for your college or university education.

10 Two Types of TOPS OPPORTUNITY/ PERFORMANCE/ HONORS AWARD Up to four years of university work toward an academic degree ONLY for Louisiana, public universities (and some approved private universities) Bachelor's Degree TECH AWARD Up to two years of skill or occupational training Louisiana Technical College or other accredited college Air Conditioning & Refrigeration, Automotive Technology, Carpentry, Computer Networking, Diesel Mechanics, Drafting & Design Technology, Early Childhood Education, Industrial Machine Shop, Practical Nursing and Welding.

11 TOPS Opportunity, Performance, Honors Award * Opportunity Award – pays tuition & some fees  (Core curriculum, 2.5 Core GPA, required ACT score, currently 20) *Performance Award – pays tuition & some fees & $400 per year.  (Core curriculum, 3.0 Core GPA, 23 ACT score) * Honors Award – pays tuition & some fees & $800 per year.  (Core curriculum, 3.0 Core GPA, 27 ACT score)

12 TOPS Tech Award  * Take the TOPS Tech Core Curriculum  * Maintain a 2.5 Core GPA (or higher)  *Score a 17 (or higher) on the ACT

14 The production, processing, marketing, distribution, financing and development of agricultural commodities and resources including wood, fiber, wood products, natural resources, horticulture, and other plant and animal products/resources. Architecture & Construction Careers in designing, planning, managing, building and maintaining the built environment.

15 Designing, producing, exhibiting, performing, writing and publishing multimedia content including visual and performing arts and design, journalism, and entertainment services. Business Management and Administration careers encompass planning, organizing, directing and evaluating business functions essential to efficient and productive business operations. Careers opportunities are available in every sector of the economy.

16 Planning, managing, and providing education and training services, and related learning support services. Planning, services for financial and investment planning, banking, insurance, and business financial management.

17 Executing governmental functions to include governance; national security; foreign service; planning; revenue and taxation; regulation; and management and administration at the local, state and federal levels. Health Science Planning, managing, and providing therapeutic services, diagnostic, services, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development.

18 Hospitality and Tourism encompasses the management, marketing and operations of restaurants and other food services, lodging, attraction and recreation events, and travel-related services. Preparing individuals for employment in career pathways that relate to families and human needs.

19 Planning, managing, and providing legal, public safety, protective services and homeland security, including professional and technical support services

20 Planning, managing and performing the processing of materials into intermediate or final products and related professional and technical support activities such as production planning and control, maintenance, and manufacturing/process engineering. Marketing, Sales & Technology Planning, managing, and performing marketing activities to reach organizational objectives.

21 Planning, managing, and providing scientific research and professional and technical services (e.g. physical science, social science, engineering), including laboratory and testing series, and research and development services. Planning, management, and movement people, materials, and goods by road, pipeline, air, rail and water and related professional and technical support services such as transportation infrastructure planning and management, logistics services, mobile equipment, and facility maintenance.
