2 Day # 2 of Dividing Polynomials  Synthetic Division Step 1: Write the terms of the dividend so that the degrees of the terms are in descending order. Then write just the coefficients. Step 2: Write the constant r of the divisor x – r to the left. Bring the first coefficient down. Step 3: Multiply the first coefficient by r. Write the product under the second coefficient. Then add the product and the second coefficient. Step 4: Multiply the sum by r. Write the product under the next coefficient and add. Step 5: Multiply the sum by r. Write the product under the next coefficient and add.

3 Use synthetic division to find (x 3 – 4x 2 + 6x – 4) ÷ (x – 2).

4 x 4 -2x 3 -11x 2 +5x+34 by x +2

5 2x 3 - 4x 2 + 5 by x - 2

6 x 4 + 3x 3 – 5x + 4 by x + 1

7 3x 3 – 2x 2 + 5x + 4 by x - 2

8 2x 3 – x 2 – 13x + 1 by x - 3

9 3x 3 – 7x + 1 by x – 3

10 Remainder Theorem  The remainder from synthetic division should be the value you get when you calculate P(r).
