Defying the System of Slavery By: Melanie Roberts & Carolina Campos

The Fugitive Slave Act The fugitive slave act was a component of the Compromise of 1850. A statement by a slave owner was all that was required to have a slave returned

Cont. Federal commissioners charged with enforcing the law were to receive a $10 fee if they returned an alleged fugitive, but only $5 if they freed him/her Anyone convicted of helping an alleged fugitive was subject to a fine of $1,000, imprisonment for 6 months, or both

The North Resist the Law Some Northerners set up vigilance committees to send endangered African Americans to safety in Canada Nine Northern sates passed personal liberty laws, which forbade the imprisonment of runaway slaves and guaranteed that they would have jury trials Northern lawyers would drag these trials out to increase slave catchers' expenses

The Underground railroad The underground railroad was an informal network of secret routes and safe house used by black slaves in the USA to escape to a free state A lot of people were involved in the underground railroads.

Underground railroad cont. It was a big risk going from the South to the North because they traveled by foot and only had natural signs like the North Star to guide them They took a big risk of their life helping the slaves be free.

I s'pose I can b'ar it as well as any on 'em." - Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Ch. 5
