2 The Bullying Survey Recently you completed a bullying survey. We are going to look at some of the results of the survey. YOUR TASK: to plan and construct a door decoration that illustrates our commitment to be a Bully Free Zone and to follow our Timberwolf Core Values

6 Spring Climate Survey Every spring we conduct a climate survey, which is completed by students, teachers and parents. The student survey asks about bullying. Last spring, 70% of students said that Bullying is Not a Problem at Cedar Heights. 30% said Bullying is a Problem This percentage hasn’t changed from last year

8 What is Bullying?

9 Bullying is …. Unwanted aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance OR Making threats or spreading rumors OR Attacking someone physically or verbally OR Excluding someone from a group on purpose AND It’s repeated over time

10 Fall Survey: Have you been bullied in the past 6 months? YES - 22% NO - 77% What does this mean? In a classroom of 30, about 6-7 kids have been bullied.

11 Comparing Climate & Bullying Surveys Spring Climate Survey: 70% not a problem 30% is a problem Fall Bullying Survey: 77% have not been bullied 22% have been bullied

12 How are kids bullied at Cedar Heights? 22% said they have been bullied in the past 6 months. They report that: 60% of bullying is name calling and teasing 25% is cyberbullying (text messages, Facebook, etc.) 33% is exclusion 20% is physical – hitting, kicking, pushing 15% is having things taken from them Students could choose more than 1 answer for this question.

13 Have you ever bullied someone? 8% said they have bullied people. In a classroom of 30, 2-3 kids have bullied someone. Have you seen others being bullied? 52% said they have witnessed bullying.

14 What do you do when you see bullying? 33% said they try to stop the bully and help the target, or they ask for help from an adult. 22% said they asked for help from an adult. 24%, said they do nothing when they see bullying.

15 What do adults do when they see bullying? 83% said adults stop the bullying and either solve the problem or tell students to leave – which is down 10% from last year.

16 What can adults do to help stop bullying? 26% suggest better supervision 30% suggest helping students work problems out 13% want more rules about bullying 11% suggest talking more about bullying prevention in classes.

20 Bully Free Zone Door Decorating Door construction will take place over the next several Den Times Doors are to be done 10/28 at the end of Den Time. The top 3 designs will receive a doughnut party
