1 African Cultures SS7G4 The student will describe the diverse cultures of the people who live in Africa. a. Explain the differences between an ethnic group and a religious group. b. Explain the diversity of religions within the Arab, Ashanti, Bantu, and Swahili ethnic groups.

2 Warm Up Explain the difference between an ethnic group and a religious group. Answer the following: Which concept relates to religion rather than ethnicity? A. Kimba is Ashanti. B. Mustafa follows the Quran. C. Kemal is a nomadic herder. D. Jumbo speaks Swahili.

3 Based on the reading, answer the following questions:
What is significant about the Bantu migration? Why are the Bantu known more as a language group than as an ethnic group? How are the traditional religious beliefs of the Ashanti similar to the traditional religious beliefs of the Japanese? Based on the Golden Stool, what can we infer is a resource available in Western Africa?

7 Show What You Know Create a Culture Map
Title your paper “African Cultures Map” Draw an outline map of Africa in the center of your paper. Create a key and color the map according to your key to indicate the region each culture lived. Divide the remainder of the page into four parts. Label a section near each culture’s region with the name of that culture and include a description of the culture. See the rubric on the next slide.
