16 Ethnic Groups Is a group of people who share cultural ideas and characteristics that have been a part of their community for generations. The characteristics they may have in common could include language, religion, a shared history, types of foods, and a set of traditional stories, language, or celebrations.

17 Religious Groups Share a belief system in a god or gods, with a specific set of rituals and beliefs. People from different ethnic groups may share the same religion, though they may be from very different cultures.

20 Major religions include Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and traditional beliefs such as animism. Trade, migration, and colonization brought Judaism, Islam, and Christianity . Animism– also known as indigenous religion: the belief that all things (living and non-living including natural phenomenon such as wind) have a soul and some of these things may be held up as gods.

21 Religions of Africa Muslims: Arabs came in the 700’s and spread Islam across the Sahara and the Sahel. Christians: Christianity crossed the Mediterranean in the first and second centuries CE (common era). Animism: About 15 percent of Africans practice a traditional religion and worship sky gods or other spirits as well as ancestors.

22 Religions of Africa Traditional African beliefs are often practiced with Muslim and Christian beliefs. A traditional Christian burial at a gravesite may also include an African traditional burial rite.

The family and the mother’s clan are most important. They live as an extended family in homes or huts set up around a courtyard. The roles of family members are set in centuries old traditions. Mothers teach their daughters pottery and housekeeping skills. At eight or nine, fathers train their sons in a skill the father chooses.

29 Bantu Culture and Religion
Signs of a prehistoric about 50,000BCE or even earlier people believed to be the Bantu. A unique language that may have started in present day Cameroon, and then spread eastward and southward. Today the Bantu are in countries from the equator to southern Africa.

Many Bantu who settled in areas where there was a strong Arab presence are Muslim. Others, living in parts of Africa influenced by missionary efforts are Christian. Others follow traditional animist religions.

Bantu Muslims and Christians retain their beliefs that precede these religions. They might believe in the power of both magic and curses. Bantu Muslims are more liberal in their beliefs than many other Muslims.

34 SWAHILI Live on the east coast of Africa from Somalia to Mozambique.
The Swahili language is a mixture between Bantu and Arabic. Many also speak English.

35 Swahili Religion: Mainly Islam and traditional religions
The Swahili have a relatively high standard of living. Their education, usually through secondary school, allows them to work for the government, and in offices and schools.
