8 Lithuania is the southernmost of Europe’s Baltic states, a former Soviet bloc nation that borders Poland, Latvia and Belarus. Its capital, Vilnius, near the Belarus border, is known for its medieval Old Town, subsequent Gothic, Renaissance and baroque architecture, and its 18th- century cathedral. Hilltop Gediminas' Tower, a symbol of the city and the nation, offers sweeping views.

9 Points of interest: Kernavė is the Lithuanian Troy. On the picturesque bank of Neris River five hill-forts surround Pajauta Valley. People have settled and been buried here since time immemorial. Over an area of 194 hectares the surviving cultural properties, numerous archaeological finds and the landscape formed in the course of history testify to the cultures which have existed in the area for 11,000 years, since the Late Palaeolithic period (9th millennium BC) to this day.

10 Gediminas' Tower is the remaining part of the Upper Castle in Vilnius, Lithuania. The first fortifications were built of wood by the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Gediminas. Later the first brick castle was completed in 1409 by Grand Duke Vytautas.
