2 Common Characteristics 1. Clear Purpose: to inform and entertain To tell the reader about a specific event in your life 2. Set Organization Pattern: Chronological order Introduction: grabs the reader Body Paragraphs: tell the events in order Conclusion: explains the importance of the events

Style: what makes your paper stand out! use of dialogue use of sensory details and careful word choice to create vivid image use of “show, don’t tell” technique to create a “movie” in the reader’s mind 4. Showing / not Telling Example: TELL= Sarah was angry. SHOW = Sarah slammed the door, threw her books on the floor, and screamed, “I hate this place!”

4 STORY TIME 1. While you listen ask yourself does this narrative have all the necessary characteristics of a Personal Narrative?

5 Attributes of Good Personal Narrative Writing 1. After listening to the Personal Narrative, brainstorm a list with your table of what makes a personal narrative successful. 2. Using the poster paper provided create a list to share with the class.

6 Quick Write Write about your name. Is there a story behind how you got that name? Include details such as setting, characters involved, and personal anecdotes. OR Write about one moment from your childhood that has stuck with you up until now. Try to utilize (use) some or all of the attributes of good Personal Narrative writing we just discussed.

7 Personal Narrative Archetype Archetype: Definition: a very typical example of a certain person or thing. Example: “That book is a perfect archetype of the horror writing." “My Name” taken from Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street is an archetype for fictional personal narrative writing.

8 HOT MESS!!! Now that you have heard the story of “My Name”, go back and silently reread the story creating a HOT MESS of connections to the writing. Think about connecting the writing to yourself, to the world or other things you have read. Be sure to underline or highlight any information that helps you understand the authors purpose or intention with the writing.

9 HOMEWORK: How might intention or purpose be shown to the reader in the Personal Narrative genre (type of writing)? Think about how Cisneros lets the reader know her feelings about her name and what the name represents.
