3/17/08Arctic Observation Integration Mtg1 Introduction & Workshop Goals Hajo Eicken Chair, SEARCH Observing Change Panel Geophysical Institute University of Alaska Fairbanks, hajo.eicken@gi.alaska.edu Context Workshop goals and deliverables Questions?

3/17/08Arctic Observation Integration Mtg2 Arctic Alaska in 2007/08: A harbinger of things to come? Several thousands of walrus are making landfall in Northwestern AK in summer due to lack of sea ice Community of Newtok is commencing relocation due to coastline retreat, Shishmaref likely to follow within 5-10 years, Kivalina sues major oil companies for damages attributed to greenhouse gas emissions Anecdotal evidence and reports from coastal AK indicate that hunters experience decreased access to ice-associated mammals in more dangerous environmental conditions 1st sale of “true” AK Arctic offshore oil & gas leases ($2.7 billion revenue, several challenges in federal courts) ASRC & BHP Billiton begin 5-year exploration of coal deposits on AK North Slope deemed some of world’s largest of high-grade coal World’s largest zinc mine in NW Alaska plans expansion of marine terminal US Coast Guard starts reconnaissance flights to North Pole and announces plans for Arctic coastal station in Barrow

3/17/08Arctic Observation Integration Mtg3 Arctic observing systems in societal context A B C Possible future states of the Arctic Arctic communities Industry Enforcement & disaster response Policymakers & regulators Broader public interests “The” “Arctic” “System”

3/17/08Arctic Observation Integration Mtg4 Arctic observing systems in societal context A B C Observing change Understanding change Track past and present change Exclude impossible states Identify most likely trajectories

3/17/08Arctic Observation Integration Mtg5 Arctic observing systems in societal context A B C Responding to change: Adaptation & mitigation Significant implications for observing systems

3/17/08Arctic Observation Integration Mtg6 Three Stages of Integration A B Regional & cross-disciplinary integration of observing system Integration of observations into modeling efforts Integration of scientific activities with stakeholder information needs

3/17/08Arctic Observation Integration Mtg7 Workshop Goals Evaluate present observing system: –Ability to track, understand and respond to rapid change –Recommendations for optimization: Identifying gaps, role of systems- design and CI in consolidating network out of components, discuss additional needs with respect to data management and dissemination, AON governance, need for central portal/hub? Improve cross-disciplinary and international integration Develop common vision that can guide congelation and integration of different efforts into a network Identify strategies to sustain critical long-term observations: –Demonstrate value of ongoing program (products needed beyond regular reporting and scientific output?) –Partnering with agencies, industry, communities and others Provide input to Lagrangian Platforms and Sea-ice Summer 2007 workshop

3/17/08Arctic Observation Integration Mtg8 Deliverables: Workshop Report & Recommendations Short-term observational gaps and further support needed to address points identified by scientific community at SEARCH Implementation Workshop in 2005 Priorities and next steps in meeting observing, understanding and responding to change scientific objectives in the long term (revisiting of 2005 workshop conclusions?) Next steps and further needs for integration & coordination of AON projects AON governance issues that need to be resolved in the near- and long-term Next steps and further needs for data management and dissemination Potential need for observing network information hub/portal AON progress demonstration: Additional products needed? Next steps for coordination and integration with federal agencies, industry, communities Next steps for international coordination and integration Need for follow-up workshop or facilitated exchanges over next 12 months
